In my social psychology class, we have been learning about group dynamics. We recently focused on deindividuation (”phenomenon in which people engage in seemingly impulsive, deviant, and sometimes violent acts in situations in which they believe they cannot be personally identified”) and it made me think about how much it plays into the existence of the KKK. Deindividuation causes a loss of your sense of self and allows for much more destructive and harmful behavior than we would normally be capable of as individuals. Racists (specifically the KKK) are able to use anonymity as power and that was clear in Birth of a Nation, where the “heroes” wore white hoods to dole out punishments to Black people.
