Examination: Shouto Todoroki
Hello and welcome to the Conspiracy Corner. Today I was wondering how, like physically, can Shouto's quirk work?
Okay, we have the ice and the fire, but where do they come from? First of all, fire is a chemical reaction, so does Shouto's body secrete a chemical, a little like Bakugo's sweat, and its oxygen-reactive, so it lights on fire on contact with the air? So, that could be how his fire works, because apparently in the mha universe people can sweat chemicals and exist, so what about the ice?
So the ice cant just appear out of nowhere, because matter cannot be created or destroyed, just changed into a different form, (law of conservation of matter) So where is the ice coming from? (and i'm pretty sure that we are still dealing with most of the basic natural physics 200 or so years in the future) How does he make the ice? We all know that when air is cooled enough, the water vapor, or even carbon dioxide gas can turn into ice too. *more on this later* So, we know that there is water vapor in the air, so we could assume that Shouto's body could release some sort of super-coolant to cool the water vapor in the air around him, kinda like his fire powers may secrete an ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species, a term used in chemistry for a chemical/element that reacts with oxygen) But! The amount of water vapor in the air is miniscule, less than 0.5% of the total amount of air we have (the other parts being 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.4% carbon dioxide, 0.4% water vapor, the remaining 2% are other things in the air) So he couldn’t use this hypothetical coolant to do much to the air around him. However, there is another solution! Carbon dioxide gas, as mentioned earlier, can also be transformed directly into ice, called dry ice. But it has to be at least -109 degrees F (-78 degrees C) for that to even begin forming, also its so cold and dry that upon contact human skin will go into extreme shock, kinda like a super-severe frostbite and shrivel up, because the moisture from your skin is soaked up by the ice, hence the name~ so its unlikely that Shouto can, or will use the small amounts of carbon dioxide in the air for his ice powers. Also if he actually did, then his body would need a better countermeasure than just his fire to help him deal with the shock of the dry-ice frost that may form on his skin if he uses his power this way. So, with not many materials to use, how does Shouto make his G I G A N T I C structures?? another explanation for his powers could be that ice expands when formed, but the amount that Shouto has demonstrated is just off the charts. there doesn't seem to be a plausable explanation of how Shouto is able to create his ice. On the other hand, what if he is not actually "creating" ice? Now, I don’t know about the technicalities of all the quirks out there, but this theory of him being able to supercool the air around him is not seeming likely. But, what if his quirk was something else entirely?
For example, we have seen moments of Shouto seeming to try to call on deeper strength/power from within himself to release his fire as seen during the battles between class 1-a and 1-b in season 5 (volumes 21 and 22, the matches starting near the end of chapter 194) And with his ice during the movie "Heroes: Rising" where he defeats an enemy using extreme cold to freeze him still. This power from within could be a little like Fa Jin (OFA third user's quirk) where kinetic energy is stored or harbored within, and released at a chosen time. Only where Shouto could draw his power from the potential energy of a situation and releases it through extreme cold or heat. I think that this potential energy could be stored for later, and so when shouto tries even harder to heat or cool things, he can force himself to release even more of that energy. However, i'm not exactly sure about this theory either, its almost fully dependant on the basis of another quirk that we know very little about. so, with my previous theory about his fire quirk, he secreted a ROS to light himself on fire. but how does he not catch on fire then? blood is highly comprised of oxygen, so it would be dangerous to have a material reactive to yourself- and not to speak of how he manages to spread it and keep it burning for so long, even on concrete structures, and when the fire is even far away from him seems to roar up as he tries harder to use his quirk too, (demonstrated in his battle in season 5) So is he pyrotelekenetic? (The telepathic ability to control fire, in this case, perhaps just the fire he makes) This seems to explain a bit to me, but there still is the issue of how he creates his fire in the first place. does he even secrete a substance to aid this chemical reaction? If not, then how can he make the fire come to life at his will? does the fire come from the energy within him? If so, then how is it released so suddenly and dramatically? How is this internal energy transformed into heat energy? s i g h, there are too many questions, my friends, and not enough answers, so, I leave you with these theories. Should anyone have any thoughts on this or other ideas, i would enjoy revisiting the topic.
