Song Review: Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway feat. Della Mae - “Sleepy Eyed John” (Live, 2024)

With Shelby Means singing lead and Della Mae adding instrumental heft, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway were temporarily transformed into another band while performing “Sleepy Eyed John” at the 2024 Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival.

Recently released on professional video with mid-tier sound quality, the collaboration was done on the fly as members of both bands looked for and gave cues for mandolin, banjo, alternating guitar and dueling fiddle sections between verses.

That it came out so clean is testament to MT&GH and DM’s prowess. Of course, the washboard probably didn’t hurt matters; it certainly helped the music.
