Spurs Survive, Newcastle Finds Belief : Three Talking Points
Alosh K Jose Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United played out an entertaining match at St. James Park with the away side winning 2-1 thanks to the goals from Jan Vertonghen and Delle Alli. Joselu sandwiched his goal between the two Spurs goal as Newcastle hit the post twice in the second half. Here are the main talking points. 1. Tottenham Survive, But Issues Persists Maurizio Pochettino responded to not getting any players in the transfer window by rolling out all his big guns in their opening match against Newcastle United. Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane and Delle Alli all started the match despite only spending a few days of preseason training and that showed, especially for Kane. With the disastrous transfer window Spurs has had, all of them need to keep fit and firing throughout the season.
The manner in which Spurs won the game will give Mauricio Pochettino much food for thought. Spurs played relatively good football in the first half, often pressing the Newcastle back line into mistakes. But everything changes in the second half which the Northeast club dominated as the Spurs stars looked visibly tired. Newcastle players were first to most second balls and hit the post twice. As noted in our transfer rankings, an injury crisis is all what Spurs required to undo all progress they achieved under Pochettino. The standoff between Pochettino and Toby Alderweireld will come under spotlight after an indecisive display from Davinson Sanchez. He s good in the air but lacks positioning which was exactly what Joselu exploited for Newcastle's equalizer. Without doubt, this Spurs side will be better off with Alderweireld in the team. But will the Belgian and Pochettino be able to put their differences for the sake of the team? 2. Newcastle Can Take Heart from the Performance Newcastle United was never out of the game and while Rafa Benitez will be relatively happy with the performance, he will be disappointed not to take at least one point from this game. Matt Ritchie looked very good in the attacking third and it was he who bent in that sumptuous cross Joselu scored from. But it was also his mistake that led to the Dele Alli goal as Ritchie decided he is simply not bothered by chasing Alli. Benitez will surely take time to preach his squad that it is the importance of defensive dedication from his attackers.
Newcastle showed they are no pushovers and arguably deserved a draw. Jonjo Shelvy showed the kind of creativity that led to calls for him to be included in the England squad for the World Cup. Shelvey is a confidence players, but if Benitez succeeds in harnessing his talent, the Englishman the Toon Army will get themselves a cult favorite. Of course, all was not well for Newcastle as Tottenham repeatedly exploited the Magpies back line in the first half. They were troubled by set-pieces which is not normally expected from a team coached by Benitez. More worryingly, DeAndre Yedlin hobbled off with an knee injury. His presence is much needed in both halves and losing him for any time period will be a blow. 3. Spurs Talisman Harry Kane has No Backups In what is fast becoming one of the greatest mysteries in world football, the otherwise prolific- Harry Kane is still to find the back of the net in the eight month of the year in any of his years as a senior professional.
Harry Kane was not involves much in the game and in fact it was a surprise that he started this game at all after reporting late due the World Cup. Jokes apart, Kane remains extremely vital for Spurs. With Son Heung-min due to jet off tomorrow to join the Asian Games and Pochettino distrusting both Fernando Llorente and Vincent Jansen, any sort of injury to Kane will spell trouble for the North Londoners. The fact that he had to play 90 minutes today without even having a proper preseason behind him shows the paucity of options for Spurs in that area. Much of these issues could have been addressed by Daniel Levy in the transfer window but he chose not to. It is not ideal state of affairs at all. Read the full article
