Rowley’s Round-up new sci-fi and fantasy books in October 2015
Last month THE MARTIAN movie, based on the book by Andy Weir, hit cinema screens across the country.
This month we take a break from space and dive into the occult with The Secrets of Blood and Bone by Rebecca Alexander. A stunning blend of historical adventure and contemporary thriller, Rebecca’s second book picks up shortly after the dramatic events at the end of The Secrets of Life and Death.
In the 16th Century we follow occultist and scholar Edward Kelley as he embarks on a secret mission to Venice. It’s a journey that will bring him closer to his ultimate salvation, by confronting the darkest deeds of his past. Meanwhile, Jackdaw ‘Jack’ Hammond starts a new life, moving to a recently inherited an old house in the middle of nowhere with Sadie. But her fresh start is threatened by a wild magic similar to her own and the battle for her soul has just begun.
Rebecca has a unique ability to make history jump off the page, interlocking the two timelines in a gripping narrative with superb characters, to deliver a powerful occult thriller with a very human heart. Dive in, you won’t be disappointed.
Next up this month we have Chaos Unleashed, the hotly anticipated final part of New York Times Bestselling author Drew Karpyshyn’s epic Sword and Sorcery trilogy.
Picking up where we left off in The Scorched Earth, The Legacy, a magical barrier protecting humanity from Chaos, has crumbled.
The four unlikely champions, each touched with Chaos magic at birth, are all that can stop the return of Daemron the Slayer. Armed with the Talismans of Power the four champions, the Children of Fire, must find the Keystone, a fabled place where, or so it is said, the Legacy can be restored. But even the noblest heart can be twisted by the tainted magic of Chaos…
Built with a set of diverse yet complimentary characters, all struggling with the taint of Chaos, Drew’s world was immediately fascinating to me: a world where humans are protected from a vengeful immortal by a fragile barrier; an epic quest across a broken landscape; sacrifice; heroism in the face of seemingly unsurmountable odds and; of course, some seriously scary bad guys to fight along the way.
The X-Files is back! Well, soon anyway...
ROWLEY’S ROUND UP: SPECIAL GUEST POST!
Every month in in our ‘Rowley’s Round-Up’ we present to you our newest and most exciting publications for the month ahead. This time, in a special guest post, we hand over to assistant editor Emily Yau to tell you what’s in store for September:
In my first guest appearance on Rowley’s Round-Up I’m pleased to share two brilliant sci-fi and fantasy novels which are guaranteed to ease you into the coming autumn months. Who cares if it’s raining outside – you’ll want to be inside reading these books, on a comfy sofa, with a cup of tea in hand…
So, first up is When We Were Animals by Joshua Gaylord, the first book I acquired for Del Rey and an absolute joy of a read. A gothic coming-of-age tale with a supernatural twist, this is a contemporary take on the werewolf novel (just without werewolves!) and it had me captivated from page one. It’s set in a small American town which holds a terrifying secret: when the teenagers reach a certain age, they run wild. However, our hero of the story, Lumen Fowler, is determined that she will be different, that she won’t ‘breach’, as it is called. It’s a coming-of-age story like no other – a bold (and sometimes unnerving) depiction of adolescence, which questions whether you can choose who you will become or if fate really does have the upper hand. For me, When We Were Animals has all the best bits of The Virgin Suicides and Let the Right One In. It’s beautifully written and really captures the angst of being a teenager. It’s dark and provocative yet hauntingly lyrical – the perfect accompaniment to a stormy night.
Next up we have the ebook publication of, what I can safely say, is the most exciting book I’ve read this year: The End of the World Running Club. A novel for which, I’m sure you’ll agree the pitch is all in the great title. Not your average post-apocalyptic story, this is a tale of love, loss and ultimately what it is to be human. Adrian J Walker originally self-published his novel last year, to great acclaim (check out all the love in these reviews) and we’re delighted to welcome him to Del Rey. The End of the World Running Club tells the story of Edgar Hill, our hapless hero who is not only the survivor of an intense multiple asteroid strike, but a man separated from his family and has to run (yes run!) the length of the country, from Edinburgh to Cornwall, in order to be reunited with them, or else lose them forever… Hugely cinematic and pulse-raisingly thrilling, this is the book you should be reading this year if you want a good dose of action, adventure and uplifting storytelling. The ebook is available at a special introductory price of 3.99, so make sure you get there first!
Michael will be back next month to tell you about two fantastic fantasy books, but until then, happy reading, and make sure to say hi to us on twitter!
