Fun little one for y’all

Spamton is the only character in Deltarune to refer to the NEO body as a body

Swatch calls it a robot, Seam an old machine, the dialogue a mechanism

But to Spamton it is exactly what it was designed to be

Sometimes I think about the time I mentioned that I thought Spamton could not successfully participate in cryptocurrency because he is canonically a failure at scamming others and people took this to mean I was saying he was too moral to do it. And it's like 'no no, he would if he could. He would do anything to make money and you know, not be homeless, but he can't'. This isn't about morality, it's about, ability The man tried to make an NFT and it was a piece of paper he put his face on and described as fungible instead of non fungible so you know....not an actual NFT

He failed to make one. He just can't grasp the concepts correctly which is...why he lives in the trash without the phone. But the level of like 'um of course he would' made me feel like people are almost....emotionally invested in him as a successful conniving scammer? I can't explain it as anything else

So I realized that I should post about this here too

So as we know, ‘and now for today’s sponsors’ is called Baci Perugina in the files

This is notable because on the Baci Perugina website, the chocolates are explicitly noted as being created by two star crossed lovers.

And Mettaton’s play is a ‘tragic tale of two star crossed lovers’. This connection is reinforced by having the Spamton mannequin in the blue dress from that play.

But it goes further

The couple on the Baci Perugina’s packaging were explicitly based off Hayez’s ‘The Kiss’, an artwork of a man in red and a lady in blue in a passionate embrace.

We can also note the design makes the dress far more princess-like, closer to the mannequin, and has a backdrop of blue with white sparkles.

Another thing to consider is the star crossed lovers here used these chocolates to pass love notes secretly due to it being an affair and it was an age gap relationship. The woman being 14 years older than the man in his 30s. Given how Tenna is noted as not understanding technology, and seeming ‘out of date’ compared to this email that was going to teach him, this also seems notable.

This simple song title in the files is implying a lot.

Always sitting with the fact that the queer neurodivergent homeless guy in the absolute monarchy with no support systems who got the snot beat out of him constantly is the one I have to argue most often was not intended to be an irredeemably evil joke despite what he does in desperation for freedom and autonomy because he is…you know…homeless and alone and puppeted

The Spamton and Dess parallels

I actually really liked this strawpage I got over on twitter as an excuse to talk a little more in depth on Spamton being trans so putting my answer here too

Yes! (Though I see it more a theory than a headcanon at this point since I rely on supporting evidence.) It might sound strange on the surface to people I imagine. Like, 'you want to tie transness to a guy who's kind of a slimeball'? 'You relate to this?' 'Why?' But it's really good I think to not just have trans characters but a range of them right? There are over 100 named characters in Deltarune at this point, so getting even more variety in representation is a good thing.

Feminine presenting trans men or trans men who are fine with dressing in feminine ways are exceptional. I just think there are also a lot of trans people who relate strongly to a couple of ways that Spamton presents himself. Trying to perhaps overperform one's gender to compensate I know is a big one that people struggle with at first, internalized negative feelings about the gender one used to be associated with, feeling isolated from one's community, struggling with neurodivergence and the troubles it can bring that are made harder by a lack of support systems, feeling rightfully angry at the injustice of one's position but to a degree where it can be unhealthy.

Like, seeing a little grungy spam email who really wants to be masculine and tries to imitate anyone that hits those beats to try and feel more assured in his identity was always gonna resonate with people since trans representation is already so limited and yeah some people are just gonna vibe more with that than someone who is more comfortable with presenting in feminine ways.

The Susie Spamton parallels

Someone told me I should bring some of my ideas on over here too I wanted to analyze the parallels between Spamton and the rest of the main cast, and so, I started with him and Susie.

A lot of Susie and Spamton's parallels are tied to being unwanted and lashing out as a result of that isolation. There is also a line to follow through about the pair of them both being determined despite the overwhelming force of fate working against them.

Of note first are the lines about being unwanted. Susie is directly contrasted with Spamton in the Susiezilla minigame with being controlled 'like an unwanted puppet' Susie also states she felt like a broken toy no one wanted which puppets are often considered, toys. The conch then is of note, unwanted, surrounded by washed up glass, and repeats what it knows. Spamton has the rotten glass flavor text in his fight, repeats what he knows in brackets, and then of course is tied to the unwanted part with the unwanted puppet line in Susiezilla.

Susie and Spamton also both seem to have struggled with fake friendships or connections that were not as deep as they longed for them to be. Susie had people get close to her as a joke. Spamton's friends abandoned him once he lost his fame and success.

The faked or lost friendships were likely the hardest hit along the road. Susie indicates this with her 'people who don't tell you the whole deal' and 'why would anyone really wanna be my friend anyway' and Spamton in the weird route with his reliving of muttering his lost friends' names. (Also of note, Spamton's 'you make me sick and Susie's 'why would anyone' indicate they both have somewhat of a dislike for themselves)

So, what happens when someone feels lost, abandoned, or neglected? Despair is common, but so too is anger. A desire to see everything burn once you have been unjustly treated. It is no wonder Susie smashed a piano after she was made to quit playing or that Spamton wants everyone to pay. With prolonged mistreatment, many turn to anger as a coping mechanism.

A general insecurity about their living situation follows them both as well. Susie indicates that wherever she sleeps she considers home even about the bush hideout. Spamton sleeps in a dumpster.

They both can be turned away from this desire to lash out through genuine connections and friendship. Susie of course gradually through chapter one until she joins the party for real, and Spamton when he believes that he is being helped then wants to live for himself and his friends before he too, joins the party. Him noting that he wants to become the gangs strength when Susie is often described as strong is also of note.

There are some bonus smaller parallels between the two that are perhaps fainter in link. With the conch likely representing Spamton, at least in part, this ties him to oceanic imagery and then during the Gerson fight, it is stated that waves crash far far far below. The sound of the ocean is that of waves. Susie also hears the song out across the water. Perhaps a small connection to fate or the unknown.

The prophecy defying determination seems to follow them both. With the prophecy panel of 'The Queen's chariot cannot be stopped', aside from the explosion, it stops once, to allow you to meet Spamton. Like his very existence briefly glitched the prophecy. With Susie I believe we have yet to see how far any prophecy bending might go but with Gerson's description of her wielding a white pen of hope that can override the dark, I believe this too will be followed through.

So, they both have a strong mutual desire to overwrite fate. I think these parallels, especially with being unwanted are lending towards the idea of struggling and continuing to do so even when it seems like there is nothing one can do. That it's important to keep trying, even if you have to change your role in the story to keep going.

Slightly on that note, tinier parallel is them both having the ability to heal despite it perhaps being unexpected given their general demeanors or behaviors on first glance. An indication that there's something trending towards rebuilding in there rather than just an urge to tear it all down.

Last little funny comparison is that they would absolutely both swear if the game allowed it.

There are even more comparisons one could draw but at a brief glance they seem to be both expressing clear ideas about abandonment, fated roles, and the idea that connections and friendship can reach people even when they seem scary, or unnerving, or like a lost cause.
