Batman AU where traumatized 10 year old Bruce Wayne, in the depths of grief following the murder of his parents, summons a demon. Alfred is an old, old demon who has grown weary of petty human conflicts and now exclusively only contracts with cutthroats and bastards in order to consume their wicked souls. Imagine his surprise when a baby looks at him with tear stained cheeks and asks for his help stopping crime in Gotham. Alfred is smitten, that’s it, game over.

Alfred dotes on his young master, doing his best to direct his charge away from revenge and toward better pursuits. “The best revenge is living well,” Alfred says, tucking him in. “No the best revenge is revenge, Alfred” 11 year old Bruce pouts. Sometimes Bruce forgets his butler is a demon who’s going to eat his soul one day cause most of the time he nags at Bruce to wear warmer clothes and eat all his vegetables. Alfred meanwhile is trying to make this young boy have a nice normal life and also dreading the inevitable day the contract ends.

Eventually Bruce does become Batman and Alfred is like “I guess this is my life now”. He trails after B a lot in the early years, making sure he’s okay and providing a lot of nightmare fuel for early criminals which steep into the Batman legend. Eventually B gets good on his own but he def takes tips from his demon butler on how to Put the Fear of Me into criminals. Alfred is resigned but also strangely proud. Look at his baby demon lite child go, saving Gotham, scaring bad guys.  

Bruce adopts Dick and Alfred hopes for a normal life but nope, Dick gets involved too. Bruce... never actually sits down and explains to Dick (or anyone) about Alfred. Its none of their business and yeah he may be inhuman but he’s Alfred, what’s there to explain. It only occurs to him, years later that he probably should have felt more worried letting a child come into a house with a demon. Dick just shrugs, so Alfred can move faster than the eye can track, that he can do literal miracles, that he sometimes isn’t restrained by human form?? Dick grew up in a circus, it’s all cool. No one questions Alfred, he’s just Like That. The JLA is confused but too afraid to ask (Hal did one time and hasn’t looked Alfred in the eye since, no one knows what the butler told him)

More kids pile into Wayne Manor and, despite his efforts, Bruce finds love and happiness again with his new life saving people and his growing family. For the first time he worries about the end of the contract. He had been so content to die before but now he finally has something to live for. Alfred senses his unease, and one night, when they are alone, he sets his clawed but gentle hands on his master’s shoulders.

“You asked for my assistance until Gotham was free from crime,” the demon says full of care and warmth and things he had forgotten over the centuries. “That is the work of a lifetime, work that will never be complete so therefore I can never claim my reward. I will be by your side for your entire life, until the day you breathe your last natural breath at which point you will be reunited with your loved ones in the other world.”

“But what about you?” Bruce asks 

“Oh worry not, I am heartier than I look, young man” also he’s been skimming souls of the bastards who hurt his family shh don’t tell Master Bruce but he eats very well

“No, I mean, when I die, you won’t be able to follow me. I want you to eat my soul so that I can stay with you always, the man who loved and raised me as his own even when it was hard.” Alfred experiences emotions humans can’t even begin to comprehend. 

It’s a debate they have over the years, back and forth. But that final destination is a long ways off.  For now, the butler Alfred has breakfast to cook for starving, noisy vigilantes. He has to magically repair the Ming vase Young Master Damian broke throwing at his brother. He needs to redress Young Master Duke’s injury from last night (with a little extra healing magic) and then violently take care of the offenders. Just another day at Wayne Manor with the Batman, his children and the demon butler who guards them all.
