Why is "quirkiness" as a benign, even endearing trait used near-exclusively to refer White people? Why is it that behaviors that would be considered cute or silly in a White person are considered weird, unnatural, or even dangerous in a person of color? Why is it that being "weird" is fine only so long as it is within the realm of comfortable Whiteness?

This is racism.

"Cute" weirdness only belonging to white and pale-skinned people, while "scary" weirdness belongs to visibly non-white and especially Black and brown people, is at the heart of much systematic violence against people of color. Darker skin does not correlate with aggression, and lighter skin does not correlate with innocence.

Racism is my white friends suddenly treating me differently after meeting my family. Oh and saying it's "dramatic" to say that g*psy is a slur.

I really hate the influx of racism towards Indians in recent years. I just feel so tired. there's so many bloggers who are as white as snow, purposefully going to rural India to try and frame the entire population as horrible.

My younger brother, who used to be such a kind and accepting person, is now extremely racist towards his OWN CULTURE now. To fit in with all of his friends who are all rich able-bodied white boys/girls who think it's funny to make fun of those who are struggling in third-world countries. They ruined him.

I'm sick of this. I can't handle it anymore.

I've seen this too. It's the exact same racism as always. "Dark-skinned people look like monkeys, look at their backwards culture, etc etc etc." It's disgusting.

I hope your brother can find a good way to express his culture and unlearn that hatred. Internalized racism is a real bitch to unpack.

my mom: you should've corrected her when she said china because it's a country where christians get persecuted :/

my mom: all the more reason for you to redirect her! she doesn't know any better, you need to explain to her in a way she can understand!

i was like...15...i felt like it was the most ridiculous thing my mom had ever said that i was aware of....idk, i'm white...but i feel like my mom saying "you can't thank The Lord™️ for the country you were born in....because government bad" is such a wild take

There was a short form video explaining a practice called lipombo. The comments were filled with horribly cruel things. One said, and I quote, “proof that some cultures need to be erased”.

(I’m not sure if this is racism or if it is considered something else but this seems like the right place to submit it.)

Practices like lipombo or foot binding were harmful, but we can acknowledge that without insisting the entire culture is bad.

reform uk members saying stuff like “nigerians should be melted down to fill pot holes” and “Africans have a lower IQ” and continuously defending racists to the point racism is getting more and more extreme in the UK

i am a disabled, brown, queer, t-boy. and despite all of those things, it hurts to realize that most people mainly choose to stereotype me based on my appearance.

i mean, i can hear you whispering when you say don't get close to me.

just because i'm blasting scream rap in my headphones and rocking out on a public bench outside the mall does not mean i can't hear you two white ladies talking about me. it doesn't even matter that i wear more alt/emo/grunge clothes.

true story, and my earliest experience with racism was when i was six years old. what is wrong with people? i got told by my white friends (white) parents that i could not hang out with her because i was "black" (i'm not even black???).

A while ago we went to the dispensary and, when they needed ID to verify our age, we pulled out our Métis card. It was just the first card in our bag we found. Despite it being legal ID with our date of birth, and explicitly on the back of the card saying that it's legal ID, the clerk insisted that we show her our driver's license instead because "she just wanted to be safe" (paraphrasing, this was last year). That clerk was white but that dispensary has an Indigenous woman on staff. The place is otherwise lovely but that was one of our first times going there and we think of it every time we have to do an ID check. These days we tend to purposefully give our Métis card rather than our license, and it's because of that incident.

This is racism.

Your Métis card is a legal ID, and should be accepted for everything a driver's license can be. Besides, not everyone has a driver's license.
