he already held few hopes that he would see anything good in the mist - not after what he’d already re-experienced. and his pessimism in this regard was proven correct, as asgore continued on, hoping to find a way out, back to the city. instead, he was plagued with more horribly, painfully familiar scenes of his past that played out in front of him - regardless of how he tried to walk away. the king’s expression flickered in-between a solemn look of mourning and muted anger. he did not want to view these memories any longer.
the ghostly echo of himself stood in front of the barrier, drawing his trident. a lone human stood in front of him defiantly, though their bravery wavered in the face of impending doom. the past version of him raised the trident, and uttered a quiet, useless apology. with one mighty blow ( asgore remembered trying to make it quick, a small MERCY ), his ‘enemy’ fell to the floor. he held their SOUL in hand, though his hands shook as he began to weep.
when asgore was able to look at anything else, he was thankful. someone that didn’t fit in this memory meant that they had come from the city, most likely. perhaps that meant he was getting close to finding a way out, though the damage was already done - evident by the king’s expression. ( the way his chest hurt as if it were his SOUL that had torn from him. ) he glanced up at the real human in front of him sorrowfully, before looking away from her. “ ...i am sorry that you ...were witness to that. ”
-- he was even more sorry that it would not be the last time he did it, should he return to the underground.
