🌳 Den Days 🌳 Who doesn’t love a den? These boys do, that’s for sure! We had a lovely morning at @nationaltrust Ashdown House, walking among the trees, playing in dens and a hot chocolate break of course! White hot chocolate from @shetlandfudge in our @oceanbottle. Is there anything better than den building in the forest at the weekend? It’s a fabulous team building opportunity that also helps kids to think about design, engineering and #physics, not to mention a bit of #knot practice! 

A standard design is the A frame den whereby the team need to find a strong, long branch to make the ‘backbone’ and two shorter branches to make the opening entrance, and lash these three together in a stable structure. You can talk to them about triangles, pyramids etc at this point to encourage shape recognition.

The kids then need to find enough of the right size branches to then make up the ‘ribs’. This helps them figure out and choose branches of different lengths Finally, they need to find enough of the right covering material to make the den waterproof, before they can jump right in and start roleplaying what woodland creature they are....

My son and I - with some of his friends - have made a few dens this summer, and the kids have loved it every time. Each time we have to go bigger!
