Roasted Pork Knuckle, Den Glade Gris, Oslo, Norway
Den Glade Gris, Oslo, Norway
After walking all over downtown Oslo, we had built up quite an appetite. We google searched to see what restaurants were close by. We were unsure what we were looking for but we knew we didnt wany to walk too far after being on our feet all day. Den Glade Gris was just a short walk from the palace and the menu looked good so we headed over. It had a rustic, friendly feel upon first look. It was early for dinner so we were seated quickly in a nearly empty dining area. Their specialty was pork knuckle so we knew that we would both order that for our main course. For a starter, I was very interested in a whale appetizer with lingonberry sauce. The whale had a hearty, meaty flavor which was cut nicely by the lingonberry sauce. This is probably not a dish for everyone as the flavor is uniquely gamey. I was happy that I tried it; my friend, on the other hand, was not a fan of the whale! The pork knuckle came shortly after. It was a very generous portion served with simple potato and vegetables. Clearly the knuckle was the centerpiece of the dish, slow roasted and finished in a broiler to give it a delicious crispy skin. The skin was fatty, flavorful with great seasoning. Unfortunately, the bulk the meat, though good, was at times on the dry side. Considering the pork dishes that we had recently enjoyed in Prague, I have to say that this version did not quite measure up. I would still say it was good but not great. I also tried a local chili stout, of which I was not a huge fan. The spice from the chili did not really interact well with the maltiness of the stout. I couldn't even finish it. Den Glade Gris, though pretty good overall, would not be a restaurant that I would necessarily recommend. In their defense, we had been enjoying some amazing Czech meats while travelling in Prague, which definitely changed our perspective. Head in a different direction for dinner when you are near the palace in Oslo. Have a great day!!
