“Harder!” You giggle, throwing your feet up with the wind blowing in your face.
Your smile stretched across your face, growing bigger when your boyfriend grunted and pushed you once more.
“You’ll fly off the swing and land on that bench over there.” He replies, pushing harder when you whine in disappointment.
“If I fly off, I know you’ll catch me.” You smile back at him, heart fluttering when you see his reddening cheeks and soft smile.
“Hey!” He abruptly stops you, pulling you off without a word and kissing you.
“What was that for?” You stare up at him, studying every inch of his face.
He reaches his hand up, pausing for a second before he cups your cheek in his hand as your eyes flutter close.
You feel his lips brush across your forehead, skimming down over your eyes and past your other cheek before reaching your lips once more.
“I love you.”
It was barely a whisper but you heard it clearly, heart beating loudly against your chest.
You pull back, stunned. You search his eyes for any indication that he’s lying, a part of you considering that you could have just been hearing things but the look in his eyes told you differently.
“I love you so much. I know people say we’re too young to know what love really is, but I know. I know that I’ve never felt this way before and I’ll never feel this way again and would you say something because I thought our one year anniversary was a good time to say it but you’ve gone quiet and now I’m thinking that I fucked up and-”
You cut off his rambling with a kiss of your own, your hands reaching up to hold him closer to you by wrapping them around his neck. You continue to kiss him as you run your hands through the hair near his neck, gently tugging at the ends.
He groans as you pull away, holding you closer by the waist as you whisper.
“I love you, too.”
“You’re leaving?” You push off the swing set, stomping across the sand as Iwaizumi sighed.
You make your way towards the bench, stumbling every once in a while when your feet dig too far into the sand.
You sit down on the bench, trying your hardest to stop the tears from falling.
“Hey.”
With each step he took towards you, your chest gets tighter and tighter. You grip the edge of the bench, trying to calm yourself and slow your breathing.
“Hey, look at me.” He kneels down in front of you and holds your face in both his hands, wiping away the tears that began to fall.
“Not only are you leaving, but you’re breaking up with me because you think we won’t survive a long distance relationship.” You push his hands away, annoyed that he’s trying to console you while he’s breaking your heart.
“I’m sorry.” His voice is soft as he pulls his hands away, standing up so he could sit next to you.
The streetlight above you began to flicker on, the birds in the trees around you chirping. You look up at the stars, trying to distract yourself by attempting to find any constellation.
“Do you remember when we first said ‘I love you’ to each other? You told me, you told me you’ll never feel this way again.”
Your phone interrupts the silence, caller i.d. showing it was your best friend and roommate. You hesitate to pick it up, by the time you’ve decided to let it ring a message appears.
Are you coming back tonight? I’ll wait up for you.
“I never will.”
“So, why are you breaking up with me just because you think we won’t make it? You haven’t even left yet and you’ve already decided to give up on us!” Your voice grows louder and louder with every passing moment.
“I can’t ask you to wait for me.”
You scoff at him, rolling your eyes and picking up your phone as you text your roommate back.
I’ll be there in 15 minutes.
“You can’t ask me to wait for you, so you’re asking me to live without you.”
“More! More!” You chuckle at the request, ignoring the whine of the child sitting on the swing as you push her softly with just your finger tips.
“If I push you any harder, you might fly off.” This earns you a cackle from the toddler, her head thrown back as she holds onto the chain tighter.
“Won’t fly off. You silly!”
“Yes you will, and you’ll land on that bench over there.” You tease, not even glancing towards the bench you pointed at.
“Next to pretty boy?” She giggles, demanding you let her down.
“He’s coming over!” She whispers, smiling up at the figure that’s approaching you.
You hold your breath when you hear your name being called out.
“Pretty boy!”
“Mitski!” You gasp, pushing down her arm that was extended to point at the man who was now only 5 feet away from you.
She cackles again, running off towards the slides before you can get another word out.
You watch in silence as she climbs up the stairs, waving back at you when she makes it to the top before turning towards another kid and introducing herself.
“How have you been, Iwaizumi.” You finally turn to him, voice nearly cracking at the sight in front of you.
He stares at you, eyes wide and mouth open as if he was in a state of shock. You can see his right hand twitch as yours does the same, longing to reach out and hold him.
“I thought I’d never see you again.” He’s quick to hug you and you allow yourself to hug back for a second before you push him away gently.
You turn around, searching for Mitski while you try to get rid of the lump in your throat. Your heart skips a beat when you don’t see her immediately and a sigh in relief when you see her pop out the tunnel slide.
“I thought that’s what you wanted.”
“No! Never. Can we- can we meet for coffee one day, talk things out.” You feel his hand hover over your shoulder before he puts it in his pocket.
“I-”
“Mommy!” Mitski squeals in excitement, her little legs running towards you.
“Sorry, I forgot you had a kid. Probably have a husband too. I’ll- I’ll go.” He was mumbling, voice strained, you turn your head to the side to see a tear sliding down his face.
“She’s-”
“Mommy!” You both watch as Mitski rushes past you, ignoring your presence as she runs towards your sister who’s kneeling down with open arms.
“Oh my sweet girl, I missed you so much! Did you have fun today.” The smile on your sister’s face is filled with love and adoration.
“Uh huh! Look mommy, it’s the pretty boy on auntie's phone!” They both turn to look at Iwaizumi, Mitski pointing at him with the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.
You feel your face begin to heat up, calling out your niece's name once more as her and her mother laugh.
“Let’s go home, Mitski.” Your sister takes her tiny hand in her own, turning towards you as she straightens her body.
“Thank you for taking care of her.” And with that, they turn and leave.
You glance at Iwaizumi, his face just as red as you expected it to be.
“I’d love to have coffee with you, maybe we could go right now?”
