Danmarks befrielse 75 år siden (Denmark's Liberation Day) 4 May 1945 was the day when the Danes got the message on the radio about the liberation of Denmark from Germany during Second World War, after the German occupation since 9 April 1940. This meant that the Danes no longer had to use heavy black curtains to keep the light from getting out of their houses. People flocked into the streets, waving the Danish flag “Dannebro” and burned their black curtains. Many lighted candles on their windows. Therefore, if you see candles on the windows in the evening of 4 May, it is because Danes celebrate and commemorate this day. The message about the Danish liberation went out on 4 May, but the official liberation day is 5 May. #danmarksbefrielse #4maj1945 #Denmark #denmarksliberation #denmarksliberationday #danmarksbefrielse75år #danmark🇩🇰 #danmarksbefrielsesdag #lysivinduet #hverforsigmensammen #befrielsen75år #befrielsesdag (her: Kolding, Denmark) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_xuyhcFU17/?igshid=1vnppvw7y35vp
Nazi Germany surrendered in early May 1945, and on May 4th, the capitulation in Denmark was announced, with effect from 5 May in the morning The Danes have marked the liberation since the end of the war by letting lights shine in the windows. When the announcement of the surrender of the Germans was transmitted in the radio on the evening of 4 May 1945, the Danes reacted by tearing down the blackout curtains and letting the light flow out onto the street. For many years it had otherwise been banned because of the German fears of the English bombers who could use the lights to navigate. So today I gage lights in my windows. Sending an extra thought to my grandma too, who lived through all of ww2 and have told me many stories from back then. #DarcArt #May4th #denmarksliberation #ww2 #ww2history
