We will be sending out feature articles on our judges soon.
We are also delighted to announce that with the help of our fantastic judges, we have a brand new format and judging criteria for the 2016 competition.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT & JUDGING CRITERIA.....
How will the judges be involved?
For every round of the tournament, each repair will be judged by all three judges working together as a team.
To ensure the tournament is consistent and fair, judges will not be present at anytime throughout the competitors repairs and will have no knowledge of who's dent is who’s, either before, during or after any repair is marked.
How will your repair be judged?
Good Repair Practice (before, during and after your repair)
For Round 1 (Door Dent) & 2 (Rail Dent) an Auto365 Live official (who will be present at the tournament area at all times) will be scoring the competitors on what is considered as good repair practice. During Round 1, there are 9 points on offer and during Round 2 there are 5 points on offer. All competitors will receive a list of these practices before the competition begins.
Scoring Round 1, Round 2 & the Final
For each and every round our expert judges will awarding a maximum of 40 points for each repair, broken down as follows:
20 points for detail and 20 for profile.
Detail The detail element is defined as maintaining the uniformity of the texture that exists within the paintwork of the vehicle. For this to be measured, the sighting aid will be positioned in such a way that the judges are looking into the repair as opposed to across it. The sighting aid will be moved into various positions in order to check for hidden creases/cuts/slashes not visible looking along the panel.
Each individual mark or scuff on the original paintwork (caused by the repair process) will incur a one point deduction up to a total of 10 points. This marking may be caused by dirt on a tap down or blending hammer. Polishing is allowed, but there is a blanket ban on any sanding. If any sanding takes place the competitors will be disqualified.
A minimum of 1 point will be deducted for each minor visible blemish of the finished repair. More points may be deducted as appropriate depending on the severity of the blemish.
Profile The profile element can be defined as measuring how the completed repair fits within the existing contours of the panel. For this to be measured, the sighting aid will be positioned at a tight angle where the judge is looking across the repair as opposed to into it. This will highlight any low areas and extended peripheral crowns/swelling/ridges which may have been caused by the initial impact. These will be taken into account when scoring.
One point will be deducted for every 5mm x 5mm (25mm squared) that does not fit the original profile. I.e. An area of 10mm x 10mm will incur a 4 point deduction as it is measured as 100mm squared area. In addition, more points may be deducted for the severity of the displaced metal.
Once the judges have finished marking all of the repairs the points awarded will be totalled together by an independent adjudicator from Auto365 Live and the the highest 8 scores will go through to the next round.
In any round, should there be a tie score between competitors, a majority vote between the three judges will decide the winning repair from the tie break.
What isn’t allowed? Competitors will be disqualified if:
They manufacture access points.
They discuss their repairs with any of the judges.
They cause damage to the vehicle.
They alter another repair.
Any sanding takes place.
All the information will soon be available to view on the PDR Masters page of our website.
