Broncos Regular Season Week 7
Hawk Valley
Quick Review
The Broncos won 18-12, but this was not the Patriots team you're thinking of. Thanks to Covid, the Patriots were unprepared for the game and it showed. It was Cam Newton's first game back from his Covid diagnosis and his timing was off. It felt like the Patriots just wanted to collect their paychecks and move on.
The Broncos on the other hand had practiced for two weeks. It's sad that with all of that preparation time, they could only manage six field goals.
Drew Lock returned from an injury, but he couldn't connect on the long ball. He was able to connect on some medium passes. Every pass he threw into the end zone ended up incomplete. The offense relied heavily on Phillip Lindsay, who just returned from an injury. After the game, Denver Bronco general manager John Elway handed Brandon McManus, the Bronco kicker, the keys to a brand new Bugatti Veyron. Not really, but the offense was terrible and the kicker saved the day.
A longer review
The first play for the Broncos was a hand off to Phillip Lindsay, for a gain of 4 yards. The Broncos moved through the air on second down when Lock hit Patrick for a gain of 40 plus yards. On first down, another hand off to Lindsay for a gain of 3 yards. On second down Lock threw the first of many incomplete passes into the end zone. There was a flag on the play, but it was picked up. I mention that, because perhaps, the Bronco offense is relying on pass interference calls to move the ball. On third down, Freeman came in, but Lock threw another pass into the end zone that fell incomplete. On fourth down, the Broncos kicked a 45 yard field goal. With 13 minutes left to go in the first quarter, Denver was up on New England three to nothing. This drive became the offensive template for the rest of the game. A 48 yard drive consisting of 6 plays, with 41 of those yards coming on one play.
After New England got their first, first down of the game, they ran the ball twice and picked up 8 yards. On third down, Newton's pass was tipped and intercepted with 9:32 left in the quarter. Denver's next drive was similar. They ran on first and second down and also picked up 8 yards. On third down, Lock threw another pass into the end zone that fell incomplete. With 8:05 left in the quarter, Denver kicked a 44 yard field goal. The score was 6-0 Denver. Aside from a Denver sack of Newton at the 4:25 mark, nothing happened for the rest of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Broncos had the ball and on first down they gained 18 yards through the air. On first down, Lock threw another pass towards the end zone...incomplete. On second down, Lindsay gained two yards. Lock completed a pass for a 27 yard gain on third down. Freeman came in and ran to the right for a gain of 3 yards. On second down, with 13:22 left, another pass fell incomplete near the end zone. To follow up that incomplete pass, on third down, Lock threw the ball out of the back of the end zone. On fourth down, the Broncos kicked a 27 yard field goal. The score was now 9-0 Denver.
The Patriots gained 7 yards through the air on first down and fumbled the ball out of bounds. With about 7 minutes left, there was a bad snap by the Patriots center and they lost 15 yards. On fourth down, New England kicked a field goal. The Denver lead was now just 6 points with 5:24 left in the quarter. Back on offense, Phillip Lindsay ran for 20 yards on first down. A few plays later, Lock hit Patrick for a 17 yard gain. On first down, Lock threw the ball away again. With 35 seconds left, New England sacked Lock for a 13 yard loss. Denver ended up kicking a 52 yard field goal to end the half. The score at halftime was 12-3 Denver.
New England got the ball to start the second half. The announcers pointed out that New England is 2-12 when trailing at halftime. On third down, Denver sacked Newton and he fumbled. New England recovered the ball, but they had to punt.
On first down, Lindsay carried the ball for five yards. Lock completed a pass to Jeudy for a 16 yard gain on second down. After the play, there was speculation that Jeudy was injured on that play. Back to the grind, and on first down, Lindsay gained one yard. Lock was sacked for a loss of 12 yards on second down. On third down, Lock connected with Patrick for a gain of 35 yards. It looked like Patrick was injured on that play. Back to Lindsay, who ran up the middle for 9 yards. Freeman came in and gained two yards. Lock then connected with Jeudy for a gain of 17 yards. Back to Lindsay for a 4 yard gain. On the next two plays Lock threw passes into the end zone, both of which fell incomplete A holding call on the Patriots defense extended the drive. With 3:33 left in the quarter, the Broncos kicked another field goal. The score was now 15-3 Denver. The announcers decided to point out that Newton has not beaten Denver in three attempts. On the Patriots next drive, Newton completed a pass to a tight end who then fumbled and the Broncos recovered. On fourth and 4 with about 42 seconds left, the Broncos kicked a 54 yard field goal. The score was now 18-3 and Denver would never score again in the game. To close out the third quarter, Newton threw an interception with 37 seconds left.
Phillip Lindsay ran to the right for a three yard loss to start the fourth quarter. Lock then threw another incomplete pass and the Broncos punted, just fifty seconds after the quarter started. New England's offense was not much better. They ended up punting two minutes after Denver punted. The highlight of Denver's next drive was a fourth and one play, where they tried to draw the defense offside. That didn't work, so the Broncos punted and New England almost blocked the punt. Newton completed a pass for 19 yards on first down. With 9:47 left in the game, Newton scrambled for 37 yards. On first and goal, with 9:25 left, Newton scored on a quarterback sneak. The two point conversion failed. The score was now 18-9 Denver.
With Denver back on offense, Phillip Lindsay ran for 23 yards on the first two plays of this drive. On the next play, he ran to the left and lost one yard. On second and eleven with 6:08 left, there was a bad snap, but the Broncos recovered. On the very next play, Lock threw an interception. The Denver defense recorded a sack on first down. On second down, Newton completed a pass for a two yard loss. On third and 17, Newton scrambled for a 12 yard gain. New England then kicked a field goal with 3:25 left, which made the score 18-12...the final score.
The Broncos got the ball back briefly, but Lock threw another interception on first down. New England then tried a little razzle dazzle and gained 22 yards. The Denver defense held for a bit, but Newton earned a first down with another quarterback sneak. On first down, New England tried a screen pass that lost 3 yards. On second and thirteen, New England called a reverse with a pass back to the quarterback which gained 16 yards. On first down Newton could not connect and his pass fell incomplete. On second down, the Denver Broncos sacked Newton. On fourth and 10 with 63 seconds left in the game, the Denver Broncos brought the house and Newton's pass fell incomplete. Game over, the Broncos offense took a snap in victory formation to end the game. Final score, 18-12 Denver.

The media tried to sell this game as a win against the old Patriots. The media asked the fans to forget about the Patriots lack of practice time and their injuries.
The media attempted to up sell Lock's performance, asking viewers and listeners to ignore his game stats and judge him by how he looked. Everyone praised McManus for his six field goals. Nobody mentioned the fact the field goals were forty to fifty yards, a clear sign that the offense was unable to move the ball.
Phillip Lindsay was asked if he plans to resign with the Broncos and he said he would make a business decision at the end of the season.

Outlook
This is the first divisional game of the year for the Broncos. In Fangio's first year, he was able to win 50% of the divisional games. He did not win against Kansas City. It snowed overnight and might snow during this game. The last time Lock played in the snow, it was in New York, against the Buffalo Bills and the Broncos lost by 17.
In the last three years the Broncos have lost 6 times to the Chiefs. The Broncos have been outscored by 68 points. The Chiefs outscored Vance Joseph's Broncos by 24 points over two years. The have outscored Fangio's Broncos by 44 points in just one year. The Broncos offense managed to kick just three field goals against the Chiefs last year.

Quick Review
The Broncos beat the Texans 38-24. The defense scored on a fumble return for a touchdown, their only points of the year. Other than that, it was a typical 2019 Bronco game. The Broncos started out fast and lead 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. They ended the first half up 31-3. The Texans then outscored the Broncos 21-7 in the second half. The Broncos only touchdown of the second half came in the third quarter.

All people could talk about was Drew Lock. People love the first half offense. The new thinking is that the Broncos have found their franchise quarterback and that the Broncos will not draft a quarterback this year. The Lock hype was a bit embarrassing, but understandable when you look at what he’s done over two games. He’s almost doubled Flacco’s offensive output for example.
During Joe Flacco’s time as the starting quarterback, the Broncos offense ranked 28th. Allen raised their ranking to 21st best offense. With Lock at the helm, the Broncos offense ranks 9th best (a period of only two games). During the same time period, the Chiefs have the 7th best offense, the Chargers the 6th best.

Outlook
Including this game, the Broncos have two divisional games left in the season. If they win both, they will end the season 4-2 in the division. If Kansas City loses this game and then beats the Chargers, the Broncos and Chiefs will have the same divisional record. The Chargers have not won a divisional game this season.
It’s an early, divisional, away game for the Broncos. The Broncos are 2-5 on the road this season.
I should point out that three teams in the AFC West now have losing records. The only team with a winning record is the Kansas City Chiefs.

Quick Review
The Denver Broncos started off on fire. The defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns and the offense scored one of their own. That was just the first quarter! In the second quarter things cooled down, the score at halftime was 35-3. In the second half the Broncos scored 10 more points, the Cardinals one touchdown.
The defense created 6 turnovers in the game! 2 of those were directly converted in to touchdowns. The offense effectively converted the other four into touchdowns. That’s perfect football. Six turnovers turned into 42 points. You can’t do any better than that!
The only problem with this game
It’s extremely rare to get 6 turnovers in a game! You can’t count on them. Without the benefit of the turnovers, the offense only scored 3 points. Without the incredible play by the defense, this game ends up as Denver 3 Arizona 10.
Correction?
The defense played so well, I may have credited them with one more turnover then they earned. Rosen may have recovered one of his own fumbles. 35 points off 5 turnovers is still rare and impressive.

During the week
The NFL trade deadline is approaching and the talk was all about the potential trade of Thomas.
Then Von Miller threw a Halloween party. A national TV show that focuses on celebrity news said the unofficial party theme was cocaine. A couple of Broncos were photographed wearing crack head costumes. Those pictures are all over the internet.
Chad Kelly left that party, invaded a home and was arrested outside the Bronco party that he had returned to, 15 minutes before the party was supposed to end. He was fired the next day.
With the trade deadline getting closer and the Broncos without a backup, the talk shifted to salary dump. There are no sacred players. The Broncos are in a bit of a financial pickle.
Kevin Hogan #9 was promoted to the backup quarterback position. The Broncos signed former CSU quarterback Garrett Grayson to the practice squad.
The brother of the owner decided to sue the Bronco trust that is managing the team the very next day. The papers were filed in the same court that is hosting the Chad Kelly case.
Von Miller got engaged.

Quick Review
The Broncos lost to the Redskins 27-11.
I’m not sure who the Broncos were rooting for in this game. They’re not hiding their interest in Washington’s starting quarterback and he played great against the Denver defense, but who hasn’t? If this was an audition for the starting job in Denver next year, Cousins won the job. Brock was unable to string together two solid games. He looked like typical Brock, a quarterback the Cleveland Browns cut.
The funny thing about the QB position this year, is that when the backup has replaced the starter, the backup has looked great this year. Then after winning the starting job and spending a full week with the starters and the full attention of this coaching staff, they play terrible the following week. Will anybody from this staff survive the summer?

The game
This is the first preseason game of 2018.
The Chiefs are starting their backup quarterback who could be promoted to their starting quarterback over the summer.
If this game gets away from the Broncos, look for Andy Reid to have fun with the play calling.
The Broncos coaching staff will try and save their jobs if they haven’t been fired already.
The Broncos play better at home, so maybe they can win the final game of the year.
