What was the original thought that led to the creation of this character?
for 42 it was, verbatim, "hey would this be fucked up or what".
for denys, i was quite fascinated by magnus's engineering of a psyker paradise pre-heresy and i just. really liked magnus. and created an oc to ship with him. i did not expect denys to take over my brain quite like she did.
Are there any motifs or symbols associated with the character? How are they represented, in their design, personality or in some other way?
a lot of thought went into both of them but w 42 specifically there's this part in the descent of baldr:
But for now he seemed content to cast himself in the role of sacrifice, and join the long line of Barley Kings before him, of Attis and Dumuzi who were slaughtered yearly upon their own altars so their blood might sweeten the earth in preparation for spring. All seemed to forget that Heitha said only upon Baldr's return would the fields ripen, and not before.
erda, in saturnine, compares many of the perpetuals to godly archetypes, and i unknowingly fit 42 very nicely into one as well: the role of the dying-and-resurrecting agricultural god.
if i ever commission art of 42 he WILL have poppy flowers, trust. i strongly associate him with poppies (symbol of dead soldiers) as well as with traditional 'sacrificial lamb' imagery, even if he 'chose' that path for himself. the god-emperor has ordained he will die for others and thus he will! over and over and over again.
denys by contrast is quite often associated with silver, opalescence, and fire. her main psychic ability is pyromancy! in the fic i'm currently writing where she's held captive by leman post-prospero burning, leman dreams of white vultures, and the number nine is recurring (as it does so often with tales about those haunted by tzeentch). in her MU, after being corrupted by tzeentch, her hair turns into a nest of white snakes, an ancient symbol of knowledge, and her ship is named 'The Amit', after the egyptian goddess who eats the hearts of the dead. she uses this ship to try and find the final shard of magnus's soul, his ib, his heart. she has been unsuccessful for over 10,000 years.
