Okay so everybody keeps saying that Richard or PJ are huge Bagginshield shippers and were probably the ones to start it. And while I'm not denying that they are shipper trash (they totes are), might we consider that it was our dear Sir Ian McKellan who nudged the subtext in that direction? He did admit in the FotR Extended Edition commentary that he was the one to prod the Sam and Frodo subtext along into place at times bc he himself saw homoerotic subtext in their friendship.

They’re all watching the playback on a scene and PJ and RA are like “Something doesn’t feel right” and Ian is like “Might I suggest, that Thorin looks at Bilbo a little longingly? Perhaps he could pull Bilbo into his arms on the carrock but when he pulls away, to look at Bilbo as if he is the only thing in the entire world. Perhaps even Gandalf could light off some fireworks after.”

Ok gotta send some happiness in regard to all this anon hate! Thorin living through BotFA and being nervous about his position as king bc dragon sickness. The Company being a kick ass support group in response. Them defending him when the gossip mill starts going, even timid Ori who stumbles through his retort & starts it a few minutes after the moment's passed. Thorin having bad days & not even having to ask for comfort. Bilbo's just THERE, ready to hug and cuddle and praise his progress.
