LAS NOCIONES BÁSICAS DEL ROLLER DERBY
BASICS OF ROLLER DERBY
Following the rules like a Boss
Some people have a problem with the idea of playing by the rules or following the rules just because they are rules. Some people like to not follow the rules so they can be badasses, wear black leather jackets, and stick it to the man (whatever "it" is).
Me? I followed the rules. If anyone actually used the phrase "goody two-shoes" when I was a kid, I would have been called this hands down. But if you have to wear shoes - and it is generally advisable to do so - wouldn't two be the optimal number of shoes? One shoe = under-prepared (unless you are an amputee, which is another story altogether). Three shoes = overburdened unless you need to throw something at something and really, who throws a shoe? I digress.
Regardless of whether your aim is notoriety or infamy, you have to know and understand the rules before you can get there. This brings me to my point:
HOW CAN YOU PLAY ROLLER DERBY AND NOT KNOW THE RULES?? It baffles me that there are people on my league who don't know the rules and/or don't care to learn them. Maybe their inner adolescent yearning for peer acceptance thinks there is something inherently "not cool" about following the rules. Maybe they were the badasses. But if you know the rules and you know how to use the rules to your advantage.
I may still be green at derby (coming up on my 1 year derbyversary), but my goody two-skates self knows the world of rules in general. And I want to learn to know and use derby's rules (Like a Boss).
