Patriots have signed a veteran cornerback
The New England Patriots released Brandon Spikes today and quickly filled his roster spot by adding help in their secondary.

Derek Cox to be released
Michael Gehlken reports that Derek Cox has been informed that he will be released today. Derek was a solid starter for the Jaguars but could not find success with the Chargers. He did not play well early and lost a lot of confidence, in my opinion. He was supposedly a strong press corner, which should have fit well with Shareece Wright and the Chargers scheme, but his technique and coverage in press was not up to par from day one. When the Chargers played off coverage, he struggled just as much. His release frees up only 1.6 million in cap space and 3.9 million in dead money, but it does open up a roster spot. I don't think his career in the NFL is done, he should find a spot on a roster somewhere, hopefully he can regain his confidence and his form.

Derek Cox is a San Diego Charger
The 5 year pro (26) Cornerback has agreed to a 4 year deal according to Michael Gehlken. Also reported by Gehlken the deal is 20 million total, with a signing bonus of 5.2 million and 10.25 million guaranteed total. All the guarantees come in the first 2 years of the deal.
An interesting selection by the Chargers. They were burned by Jerraud Powers when he never got out of Arizona, he was supposed to visit the Chargers but never made it to Southern California. Cox is ranked as the 22nd best cornerback last year by advancednflstats.com but is not seen around the league as a player of quite that caliber. He's seen as an above average player, but injuries have been a problem for him. An interesting tweet from Annie Heilbrunn states that Cason would have accepted such a deal if it had been offered to him.
