Robert travels less than predicted when he comes to an unexpected halt. Obstructing his path are several strays cats; a few are tending to their fur, another one looks longingly at the upper floor for the motel, and the rest are drifting into an afternoon snooze. He has the option to step over or around the felines and continue on his way - but who is he to deny cats a little under the chin scratches?
As he kneels, his joints creak, a unwelcoming reminder of his age. He brushes it off and reaches over to scratch the dazed cat’s chin, who enjoys the touch and forgets all that preoccupies her mind and vice versa with Robert. A rare smile graces his face and he adds a bit more to the motions, stroking the feline’s head and down her back, ignoring the grimy, sticky fur that clings to his calloused hands.
“You’re no Betsy... but I wouldn’t mind a visit every once in a while.”
The cat’s attention suddenly rips from the affection and she along with the others quickly (and excitedly) dart past him. He turns on his toe to follow the clowder; dark eyes hidden behind shades meets a younger female, who’s appearance looks much like a cat with that black bow. He comes to a slow stand, hiding the painful expression as his joints nearly buckle underneath him.
"So you’re the new neighbor?”
Yep, he’s acting as if he’s lived here all his life.
