Being a soldier
Once again, I’m talking about Descendants of the sun. Oh God, I should keep myself calm as I would go in a super difficult withdrawal syndrome as soon as the last episode of DoTS ends tonight. I never had any family member who is served in the army, nor having any military background. We are more likely from ‘teacher descendants’ (ah.. descendants sounds like a hype word these days :p) as most of our family members are teachers; my mother, my aunts, my father was a teacher when he met my mother, my grandpa was a head of school and even my great grandpa was a teacher, which being the reason why my grandma had an access to go to school when it was quite impossible for Indonesian to go to school at that time. So yes, we have never get any information about how military life really is from a family member. But the truth is we respect army so much. My brother is a die hard fan of fighter aircrafts. He had a huge poster of F16 Fighting Falcon posted on a wall in his room. He collected all Angkasa bulletin which discuss about planes, including fighter aircrafts, and sometime provide some pages for army and military stuff articles. I had the opportunity to see the daily activity of Indonesian soldiers when we had a full week joining Leadership Training held by my former campus in collaboration with Kodam Siliwangi (which is the military base in our area). And I was in awe, seeing how obedient soldiers were to their superior. They always follow orders, despite their own personal objection. And those were reflected well in DoTS drama. I highly respect soldiers, with their devotion to the country, with little salary and yet willingly to be sent to far away areas to guard Indonesian borders which mostly have minimum facilities. They were sent to the deep of the jungle to fight the separatists in Poso (My deep condolences to those who died in a mission few weeks back. Truly, I respect you, so much! Couldn’t bear the grieve if I were one of the soldiers’ family member). They died to save passanger in a plane hijacked by an Islamic extremist group. Ect, ect. They were sent in so many missions and were proved that they are one of the best in the world. And I am proud of it. Do you know that our special forces are among the most elite special force in the world? Not because of the sophisticated-highly tech-modern equipment, but due to their individual skill. With limited budget to even keep the equipment worth to use, our troops have better quality in term of individual skill to survive in a bad condition and to fight even tens of bandits. And many were died during training to be a special force. As in my opinion, Indonesian soldiers might be the toughest people I’ve ever known. Well, yeah, devotion and patriotism came from brainwashing. Civil people won’t get these kind of attitude and philosophy of life just by reading moral or history book. We need to be brainwashed, as moral has been washed away from our life, let alone the devotion to the country. And once again, devotion and patriotism can not only be done by being a soldier and carry a gun, but do your best for the country, in any way. OMG, did I blabber so much just because of this DoTS withdrawal syndrome? Okay, I must stop now. And last, but not least, 18 Philippines soldiers were killed last time in their government's attempt to fight a group of separatist that were also keeping some of Indonesians as hostages now. Without paying little respect to the death of the Phillippines soldiers, let’s hope our talented army will gain success to rescue our people and send them home. Salute!
