Kalamashoegazer 16 (Day Two) at Bell's Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo, MI
by Eric Eggleson
Day 2, started earlier because there were seven bands. Chicago's Desert Liminal added a nice touch to the scene with violin and keyboards.
♫ ☾ Desert Liminal's unique sound centers dream-like poetry and vocal harmony within a cloud of analog synth textures and layered, swirling
Next up, Philadelphia's Cigarettes for Breakfast packed a lot of sound for a threesome.
Cigarettes for Breakfast is a Philadelphia-based band known for their lush soundscapes and raw, emotive, fuzzed-out performances, capturing
Chicago's Snowcuffs covered the dream pop side of the festival. If the guitarist on the right looks familiar, Neil Yodnane is also in Lightfoils.
Kalamazoo's Vida Eterna is super group of sorts. Yup, that's April Zimont (Kalamashoegazer's organizer) on vocals. They covered the gamut of the scene including a Love & Rockets' cover!
Next, Milwaukee's Brief Candles, a staple at Kalamashoegazer, blasted their way through their set. This time they were joined by a keyboard/trumpet player!
All the way from Olympia, Washington, Waves Crashing was another sonic threesome that blew the crowd away.
Cascadia shoegaze
This year's festival closer, St. Louis's Seashine, pulled it all together with dueling guitars filled with distortion.
This was my third Kalamashoegazer. This one being the first two day version of the festival, I believe. If you've never been, it's time to mark your calendar for the next one. It's always a great time and a chance to catch up with bands and friends. But the best part for me was spending two days with my brother, Peter, who lives in South Bend. April announced there might be some smaller (whatever that means) events in the coming year. I know I'll be looking forward to those.
