Producers of Science Fiction visualise the future.... Producers of Design Fiction create actual prototypes for the future - both explore possible future scenarios based on existing technologies, human interactions and imaginative predictions....

Consumer food production - if you can print any shape, why print tomatoes?

This team has successfully prototyped a modelling tool that allows users to create their own fruits based on the familiar components of natural fruit development.

This prototype considers the future but tests it within the current limitations and opportunities... Our fruit simulator can now be operated on your computer, multitouch surfaces and in VR environments.

Imagine a wearable insole that can transform our kinetic energy into electricity and redistribute that power back into our cities through public transfer stations. By using piezoelectric nano-generators and capacitors, Step can build up over 100W with every step we take. By redefining how commuters power our cities, we can begin to re-imagine how urban planners will develop for the future, and how city council can create opportunities to repurpose our energy. Together we can power our homes, neighbourhoods and entire city blocks.

In thinking about the challenge theme this year, envisioning a wearable city, we wanted to tackle the problem of women’s safety in cities.

eq Wall - Video Prototype

Using green screening techniques to present the eq Wall interface and to demonstrate the user interactions. User interactions are both gestural (motion capture, responding to far and near movement) and intentional (multi-touch, using menu categories to explore content on Queensland).

Here is our concept for the BAC (Brisbane Airport Corporation) to develop a large interactive display for travellers, greeters and farewellers to digitally explore queensland at the Brisbane domestic and international airports.  Been working with an amazing team this semester to research, conceptualise and design this project with the BAC and QUT.  Hope you like our concept as much as we've enjoyed making it!

DesFi 2014 - The eq Wall Project

We have our first video prototype ready to go for the new eq Wall Project:

The eq Wall is a large scale dynamic display, made up of six multi-touch screens, motion capture technology, and directional speakers, spanning over 3.7 metres in length and 2.2 metres in height. The eq Wall is designed to be modular, with the ability to be moved to any location within the Brisbane Airport Terminals. Likewise, the user interface and underlying system has been designed to allow the screen image and data-base content to be replaced allowing for an alternative display and menu content.

The teams’ focus was to design a visitor experience that was aesthetically inviting and surprising, responsive to both motion and touch (for far, near and close encounters), informative of Queensland and sustainable for future developments.

The above images illustrate the design process... from early brainstorming, case study analysis, wireframes, UX mock-ups and green screening...
