EP Review: Pussy Riot - xxx

After he’s elected president and he’s finished prosecuting Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump’s gonna grab ‘em by the Pussy Riot.

And it’s gonna be great - really terrific - believe me.

Also great and terrific is Pussy Riot’s new skewering of Trump, “Make America Great Again,” one of three tracks - along with “Straight Outta Vagina” and “Organ” - appearing on the Russian trio’s new extended single, xxx.

“Organ” is throwaway electronica sung mostly in Pussy Riot’s native tongue - probably as a “fuck you” to the Donald - while the disco-EDM blend of “Straight Outta Vagina” (great title, really terrific!) features Desi Mo and Leikeli47 and is also a “fuck you” to Trump.

Don’t play stupid/don’t play dumb/vagina’s where you’re really from

While these tracks are nothing to get super-excited about, “Make America Great Again” is sure to fire up everyone who knows what words like misogynistic, xenophobic and homophobic mean and think they have no place in society.

Did your mama come from Mexico/papa come from Palestine/sneaking all through Syria/crossing all the border lines/let other people in/listen to your women/stop killing black children/make America great again

Accompanied by a sexually charged video filled with faux Nazi - read: Trumpian - imagery, “Make America Great Again” translates Trump’s insidious bullshit into what his words really mean. It imagines a post-Trump America as reported by TNN (Trump News Network) where women are scrutinized to ensure their bodies are acceptable and anyone deemed an “other” is tortured and shunned.

It’s amusing, if yugely scary. Not terrific. And certainly not great.

If you don’t believe Sound Bites, believe Pussy Riot.

Coming from Russia and having been imprisoned for speaking their minds, the women of Pussy Riot have a unique perspective on what America is threatening to do to itself with Vladimir Putin’s political bedfellow.

And unlike its EP mates, “Make America Great Again” is musically palatable as well, a mix of smooth, melodic hip-hop and pop that belies its controversial lyrics.

The deplorables’ll hate it. But “Make America Great Again” is terrific. The best.

Believe me.
