#1 Believe in Design Education - "They know what they're talking about"
David Crow is a professor of typography and manages the art and design program at the university of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He started out as architecture and then his interest in the design profession began to grow. He had to secretly take classes at the school he teaches at now to become a graphic designer. This brought him to the biggest concept in this podcast which is a designer must be versatile and be able to adapt to many different situations to survive/thrive in this industry. This is what he owes his success to, being a very adaptable person. His life took him through many areas of practice but he just went along with it and now he is a manager of the very program he attended and loves what he does. The way that he described how he taught was very interesting to me as well. He tries to keep his students minds open and always on the hunt for news things that they want to try. Crow bases all of his classes around the students exploring the idea behind everything that they create, nothing is out of place and everything has a reason. This way of teaching and running a program attracts many people that are not creative making it more competitive for the students. This relates back to what Crow was originally saying about how a designer has to be to adapt. The students that make it through the program will end up being all those types of people, the versatile and adaptable people. So what I mainly took from David Crow is be able to teach yourself new techniques and new ways of doing things better and don’t be afraid to dive in head first and try something new.
