Week 4 and 5. "How to Analyse a Work of Design" & "Field Trip to National Museum of Singapore".
Through week 4, I learned about the significance of understanding the context and purpose behind design decisions, and how these factors influence the final product. The processes and purposes, subject matter and meanings, choice of medium, and aspects of form are all key elements to consider in the design journey. I discovered the fascinating works of Yayoi Kusama and Louis Vuitton, Moulded Plywood, Freitag and etc.
The study of the Tip Top Shoes Shop's paper bag during week 5 Field trip showed me that every design choice, from the materials used to the placement of the logo, is a strategic decision that reflects the culture and time period of the product:
Processes & Purposes: The paper bag from Tip Top Shoes Shop was likely a result of the shopping culture in the 1960s. It served the purpose of being a carrier for purchased goods, and also acted as a walking advertisement for the store because it features a logo and marketing illustrations.
Subject Matter & Meanings: The bag is a representation of the bustling trade activity of the era, specifically in the Raffles Place area. It implies a time when shopping was a more tangible, personal experience, with haggling and direct interaction with traders. During this era, Singapore was undergoing rapid urbanization and development, and the rise of shopping culture was a testament to the city's growing affluence. The practice of haggling and direct interaction with traders is indicative of the vibrant and bustling street markets that were a staple of life in Singapore during that time.
Choice & Uses of Medium: The chosen medium for this piece is paper and twine. The choice of paper suggests a preference for cost-effectiveness and practicality. The craftsmanship is simple, functional, and likely mass-produced.
Design Aspects: The bag's design balances symmetry and harmony, using careful placement of the logo and illustrations to avoid clutter and enhance appeal. The rhythmic repetition provides comfort, while the bold store name grabs attention, guiding the viewer to the brand.
