#DesignTV Challenge Winner Meredith Heron Tells Me About Her Winning Design

Last week Amy and I held our first #DesignTV contest on our facebook page. Followers were asked to "Like" the entries that were posted to the page and the person with the most likes would win! 

Meredith Heron a fellow designer and #DesignTV alumna won with the most "likes".

Below is Meredith's vision for the NYC apartment space we gave everyone to work with.

We had set perimeters that the space must be able to function for dining, reading, working and sleeping with an eclectic flair.

Meredith's vision began with this Merano glass light fixture to set the tone.

Meredith then began to think of the function of the room. Remembering childhood visits with her mother Meredith chose a divan for seating/ sleeping. A divan is a sofa that folds down to create a bed using both the back and the seat as the bed once flat. I recall sleeping on divans as a child too and wonder why we don't see more of them around these days? She decided to tuft the divan for a more elegant appearance. 

Meredith found inspiration in a simple rough sketch I had done for a client's home addition project incorporating sofa, bookshelves and table.  Meredith positioned her bookshelves to wrap around the kitchen door, finished in her latest obsession- cobalt blue lacquer.  

In my client's project the sofa is built in to the shelves. Meredith's design put her sofa against the wall using antiqued mirror behind to reflect distorted light and movement rather than a clear reflection of the room and people in it.

On the opposing wall to the bookshelves Meredith created a radiator cover that spans the entire wall covering the rad, adding storage and providing a serving top in white marble.

Hardwood floors were painted in a diamond pattern.

Ottomans provide extra seating around the table without obstructing views and taking up visual space.

In the foreground and sharing the line between this alcove and the living room are Meredith's favourite chairs from Mitchell Gold. The Major Chair.  A zebra ottoman sits between for a dash of classic animal.

Congratulations to Meredith for a job well done! She received a fabulous signed edition of Stan Williams book, "The Find" 

 "The Find" is a celebration of those who collect, repurpose, reuse and see creative potential in things that others might ignore. Beautifully photographed there is inspiration on every page whether you're a savvy flea marketer or not. The rooms are simply lovely.
