DESN500 21.03.16 - Small edit on the Presentation

One of Aimee’s initial ideas was expanding this product from targeting those who suffer arthritis to those that have lost their hands from accidents or war. It was meant to be included in the presentation but due to the outcome of the cup and everything else that we have structured in the presentation, it would have only caused confusion. So, I had opted to take it out to make the presentation clearer on who our target audience is.

DESN500 22.03.2016 - Making the Model

Before going into making the model for the presentation, Aimee decided that we should do a number of iterations to further flesh out the design. Sadly, I forgot to take photos but during the process, I played around with the idea that instead of having the handle go around the whole hand, why not use it on the thumb. Given enough support from above, the thumb-hold design creates an easy grip while securing your hold on the cup. In the end, we decided to go with the thumb-hold design.

DESN500 03.03.16 - The W’s and H

Here are the W’s and How of my DESN500 project. It will server as  the structure and guideline that I will follow to achieve a successful product.

What is it? A cup that prioritises aesthetics.

Who is it for? People who desires a stronger attachment with their hot beverage container.

How will it create this attachment? By providing a way of customising the cup.

Where will it be situated? On a desk at work.

When will it be commonly used? In the morning and tea breaks.

With no current business model, all of this is currently invalid and all we did this week is experiment on all the possible concepts that we can follow through. next week, we’ll hopefully narrow down what we’re trying to achieve and who it is for to critically decide on the appropriate concept to develop.

DESIGN FOR BUSINESS

Started our design, a container for a hot beverage.

We got into groups and discussed our own personal preferences as if we were buying a mug and discovered some of the preferences each of us had on many design aspects before talking through many of our own ideas.

Important ideas for me from our group discussion - Connection to the user    hands and lips molds to your hand(and lips?)  gel,silicon,memory foam tactile, slightly textured  curved, unique, one off, imperfect overall look

Other ideas to explore more - customised silicon sleeve colour changing Slide lid    Salt shaker with twist select non-round shape under cup storage

I think each of us has a different idea on how functional it needs to be or the importance of the aesthetic element but we made good headway today with our discussion and even agreed on some ball park concepts we would like to peruse.

Start of Design for Business

Just a small update on my lecture earlier for design for business. Though it was just the first day, I’m hopeful that this paper will be really useful later on for my other projects. I get the feeling that it’ll touch on things that I already know and elaborate and expand on it. Things such as purpose of design, emphasis on user and among other aspects of design are always good to be revisited.

Hopefully, I’ll be more aware of the things to consider while I’m designing through this paper.
