“You have very good taste in clothing Dean.” Cas flirted, well, at least he thought it was a flirtation. But Dean just gave him a mildly offended look and responded with “thank you” but it sounded more like a question.
He tried again later that day. “You are very aesthetically pleasing Dean.“
Same response.
So the next day, Castiel tried again. “You’re hunting skills are unparalleled Dean.“ While, Dean smiled at him, it wasn’t the response Castiel wanted. It seemed as if Dean did not realize that Cas was trying to flirt with him. Cas decided that he needed help.
Sam nearly choked on his beer when Cas asked him how to flirt with his big brother.
“Jeez Cas, I don’t know!” He exclaimed.
“My attempts at flirting have been entirely unsuccessful. I am unsure of what I’m doing wrong. You have known him the longest, can you help me?” Cas asked, feeling desperate.
Sam sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I dunno Cas...just, be forward with him.”
“Forward?” Cas asked, tilting his head to the side.
“Yeah, like, just be straight--or uh...bi?--with him. Don’t be subtle, just tell him how you feel. No more little hints here and there, throw everything you’ve got right over your shoulder at him. Be forward.”
Cas nodded his understanding and thanked the younger Winchester as he turned to go find Dean. Cas didn’t have to look very long because Dean was in the main living room, stretched out on the couch.
“Dean, I need to tell you something.” Cas announced as he made his way to the hunter. There must’ve been something in Cas’ voice that alarmed Dean because he was on his feet and meeting Cas in the middle.
“Everything okay Cas?” Dean asked, voice worried.
“I uh...I hope so.” Cas stammered, his eyes darting around the room as his heart raced. He was so nervous, unsure if Sam’s tactic was going to work. But the angel had no other choice, so he grabbed Dean’s wrist and propelled the man right over his shoulder while shouting, “I LOVE YOU DEAN” as he used his grace to soften Dean’s fall to the floor.
Dean slammed onto a soft landing, but the air went out of his lungs nonetheless and he stared up at Cas with wide, incredulous eyes before he scrambled to his feet.
“‘What the hell was that?!” Dean demanded.
Castiel’s heart dropped at the angry look on Dean’s face. Sam’s method had not worked.
“I was being forward.” Cas replied.
“Forward?! Who the hell told you that was being forward?”
“Sam.”
“SAMMY!” Dean over his shoulder. He turned back to Castiel. “Listen here buddy, I don’t know why the hell you thought throwing me over your friggin’ shoulder was a good idea, but next time you make a declaration of love to me, make sure you’ve got beer and pie alright?”
Cas shakily shook his head yes, his blue eyes wide and fearful. But then Dean smiled crookedly at him. Cas immediately smiled back, he couldn’t help himself, but he was still confused.
“Dean...I am...confused.” Cas told him.
Dean rolled his eyes and bent down to kiss Castiel. “Must be a day that ends in y.” He said once he pulled away.
“Does this mean you love me as well?” Cas asked, heart full of hope.
Dean squirmed a bit. “Look, uh...I ain’t so great with the word stuff alright? Don’t expect any grand gestures or anything. But...yeah Cas. I do. I have for a very long time.”
Castiel’s answering grin was blinding. He reached for Dean’s neck and pulled him in for another kiss, this one passionate and demanding.
“What the hell are you yelling at me for Dean, what do y--ugh, gross guys! Warn a guy next time!” Sam cried.
Cas could feel Dean flipping Sam off from behind his back and he smiled against the hunter’s lips.
“Beer and pie?” Castiel asked as he pulled away.
“Sounds good to me.” Dean answered.
And with a flap of wings, they were on their first date.
