Dean woke in the morning to a peculiar smell coming from the kitchen. As he stirred, his senses coming online, he was able to tell that the smell he detected was the sweet smell of his coffee brewing. Confusion set in as he automatically went to feel for the other side of the bed, only to be met with a cold emptiness.
Oh yeah, Dean thought. Other Cas is still here. My Cas is probably still talking to him before they leave.
Castiel had escorted Dean had back to his proper timeline last night, and once everyone was reunited in the bunker, they had all decided to hit the hay. Cas had shown their younger selves to one of the rooms in the bunker, and had returned to what was essentially âtheir roomâ in the bunker. They didnât frequent it as often as they used to, with the Winchester brothers being semi-retired and all, but every so often a hunter would pass through and need a place to crash. Or if there were something major that they got wind of that needed all hands on deck (those incidents were far and few in between now, especially since Jack was the new God and Rowena was ruling Hell with a ruthless iron fist).
Rubbing his eyes in an attempt to wake up more, Dean moved out of bed and shuffled to the bathroom to wash up and brush his teeth. Satisfied that he didnât look like death warmed over, he made his way to the kitchen, where he was greeted with the sight of both angels and his younger self in conversation.
The sight of seeing a version of himself other than his reflection shouldâve been incredibly jarring for Dean, but considering the line of work he was (kind of still) in, it didnât resonate as much. What was more surprising was the fact that not only were both angels present, his angel looked awake, alert, freshly showered, and presentableâŠand it was roughly only 9:30 in the morning, according to the clock on the wall that Dean caught a glimpse of. It was a rare occurrence for Cas to beat Dean out of bed, but that didnât mean it didnât happen. Even rarer was it for Cas to be out of bed and fully dressed before Dean could even roll over. Dean mentally deduced that present company had forced Casâs hand in that regard, especially since the younger angel hadnât properly experienced the âwondersâ of basic human behavior.
âMorninâ,â Dean Winchester greeted. âThereâs coffee on the counter.â
Dean grunted a âthanksâ in response, still a little groggy. As he made towards the counter, he patted Castiel on the shoulder. âMorninâ Cas.â
âHello, Dean,â both angels responded, followed by each giving the other a look of confusion.
Deanâs hand stilled where it was reaching for the coffee pot, and spared a look at both angels, both of whom were now fighting a blush. Dean only let out a low chuckle as Dean Winchester said, âIn stereo, nice.â
Cas cleared his throat. âWe were just talking.â
Dean turned his head to look at his husband. âAboutâŠ?â he asked with an arched eyebrow.
âTheir plans,â Cas answered cryptically. âAnd what they plan to do when they leave here.â
Deanâs stomach turned over slightly as he processed what Cas was saying. âCas, I thought we werenât supposed toââ
âWhatâs happening on the current season on Dr. Sexy,â Dean Winchester chimed in. âI canât believe Charlene ends up with Dr. Sexyâs brother.â
âOh brother, youâve got a long way to go,â Dean said with a low chuckle as he sipped his coffee. The back of his throat was greeted with a familiar burn that warmed his entire body. Not the way he liked Cas to do it, mind you, but a welcome reprieve nonetheless. âWait till you find out about the twin.â
âThe what now?â Dean Winchester asked, confused.
âDean,â Cas warned. âYouâre spoiling it.â
âBah, heâll forget it by the time it gets here,â Dean said nonchalantly, taking another sip..
âIâve also been discussing the Alpha creatures with my future self,â Castiel mentioned after a beat.
âYeah, Cas thinks we got something thatâll work. My Cas, that is. Weâll kick those bastards back to kingdom come,â Dean Winchester said.
Dean looked at Cas inquisitively, who merely shrugged in response. Later, Dean heard internally in Casâs voice. Sometimes Dean genuinely forgot how powerful of an angel Cas really was. To Dean, he always seemed like this dorky little human who found flight patterns of bees interesting. And then there were moments like this, where Dean would be reminded of who he marriedâusually at the most random of timesâvia some off-the-cuff throwaway power.
Seriously, how many people could say that they genuinely have a psychic connection with their spouse?
âWhat, no advice?â Dean Winchester asked, slightly affronted by his older selfâs silence. âNo word on how to stop this? On what happens next? What happens tomorrow? Could you at least give me the lottery number for tomorrow?â he asked, looking between both Cas and Dean.
Shaken out of his reverie, Dean simply responded, âKid, even if I knew tomorrowâs numbers, I sure as shit wouldnât give them to you,â and took another sip of his coffee. âCanât risk messing up the timeline.â
âWell then, what the hell was the purpose of this goddamn trip?!â Dean Winchesterâs voice was starting to climb. âWe just wasted a half a week scrambling for crumbs, and you assholes canât even give us the time of day.â
âDean, calm down,â Castiel said calmly. âThey pointed us in the right direction, and weâre leaving with more than we came with. We have an idea of what weâre up against, and a plan on how to stop it.â
âIt sure as hell doesnât feel like it,â Dean Winchester grumbled. âFeels like weâre being stonewalled âcause of Mr. Secretive over there,â he added, gesturing to his older self.
âOk, ya know what? I didnât just finish busting my ass covering your ass to get chewed out by your ass,â Dean said, fully annoyed now.Â
God, was he always this way with everyone?
Setting his cup on the counter, he went to grab a seat across from his younger self. âYou want me to tell you the next few years are gonna be full of sunshine and fucking rainbows? Well, theyâre not. Itâs gonna suck.â
âDean,â Cas warned.
âRelax, Cas, I got this,â Dean said, holding up a hand to silence his husband. âThe truth is youâre gonna say some shit and do some shit that you think is gonna be the right thing to do. And in the moment, it may be. But you better ready to deal with what happens afterwards. Most of itâs gonna suck ass, and youâll have no one to blame but yourself. And youâll pray for another chance to do it overâdo it differentlyâand it wonât come. And youâll be stuck.â
Dean spared a look at Cas before continuing, âSome things are gonna happen that are gonna hurt like hell, and youâre gonna wish that you could change it. Fix it. But the truth is you canât. You can only deal with it.
âSo you want my advice? Think before you act. Donât go running off with the first hair-brained idea. Youâll be better off for it.â Dean let what he said rest in the air a bit before he added, âOh, and lay off the beer and burgers a little. And exercise more. Your legs will thank you later. Just donât let Sammy catch you, or youâll never hear the end of it.â The last statement was punctuated with a roll of his eyes and a low chuckle from Cas.
Dean Winchesterâs jaw clicked ever so slightly, a sign of his growing annoyance. âReally? Thatâs all? A few cliches and some shitty one liners is all youâve got?â
âThatâs all youâre gonna get,â Dean retorted with an arched eyebrow. âUnless youâd like a black eye and busted lip to take back as a consolation prize.â
âNo fighting please,â Cas said. âI would like to keep the kitchen clean if I can help it.â
âAgreed. Besides itâs time for us to go. The spellâs gonna be wearing off soon,â Castiel said, giving Dean Winchester a look as he got up from the table. Dean huffed a âhmph, whateverâ under his breath, and rose with him. Clearly the advice he was given was not what he expected, but Dean could see it on his younger selfâs face clear as day how enamored he was with Cas. Even then.
Holy shit, Dean thought. Hindsight really is 20/20. I was whipped.Â
âOne more thing,â Dean said, rising from the table along with Cas. Dean spared Cas a look before continuing, âWhatever you guys do, justâŠtalk to each other. Be honest. Donât hold secrets. Secrets get people killed.â He gave Castiel an intense glare before continuing, âYouâre gonna need each other a lot more than you realize going down the road.â
âI can handle myself,â Dean Winchester said gruffly.Â
âMaybe, but if Cas can help, let him help.â He gave Cas another fond look before eyeing the couple in front of him. âAnd donât take him for granted. He means more to you than you know.â Remembering the promise he made, he amended quickly, âThey all do. Sammy, Bobby. Youâre gonna need them all. Especially with whatever plan you guys end up going with.â
Dean Winchester shifted uneasily at the reminder of their mission, sparing a glance at Castiel before mumbling, âEven Cas?â
âEspecially Cas. More than anyone. And thatâs okay.â Dean wanted to say it, but knew he couldnât, so he did his best to try and emphasize it in a way his younger self could understand.
That contrary to what his father had said, it was okay. That it was okay to fall in love.
Shaking his head, as if he found new resolve,
Dean Winchester let out a breath and said, âYeah, ok. Câmon Cas, letâs get outta here,â and began ushering Castiel towards the exit.
âGood luck,â Cas said, getting up from the table and coming up next to Dean.
âThank you, both of you, for all your help,â
Castiel responded, shaking hands with both Dean and his future counterpartâs before heading for the exit. âI hope this plan works.â
âOnly one way to find out,â Dean said.
As they made their way to the exit, Dean could hear his younger self talking about the texts he had found in the bunkerâs library and what that meant. He felt an arm slip around his waist, and automatically leaned into Casâs embrace. âHow badly did we fuck this up?â Dean asked.
âOn the contrary, Dean, we gave them exactly what they needed. You especially,â Cas said, stroking Deanâs side.
Dean hummed in appreciation. âStill. Scale of one to ten?â
âThree. The anecdote about the incompetent doctorâs twin brother couldâve been left out of conversation,â Cas said arching an eyebrow, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
Turning to face Cas fully, Dean gave Cas a look as he held up a hand. âOkay, one: Dr. Sexy isnât incompetent, heâs a damn fine doctor.â
âHeâs committed multiple infractions in the workplace, some of which were potentially life-threatening,â Cas shot back.
âYou gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet, Cas,â Dean said flatly.
âIf his experience as a doctor is any indication, I think heâd be an even worse chef. And that still doesnât his excuse his morally objectionable behavior.â
âLike what?â Dean asked, making a face at Cas that all but said, Go ahead, Mr. Know-It-All. Prove me wrong.
âHaving sex with a subordinate coworker in the storage closet of your place of employment while on shift. And in the middle of a lockdown, no less,â Cas responded archly.
Damn. Got me there. âAlright, you got a point,â Dean conceded with a roll of his eyes. âBut it makes for good TV.â
âIf you say so,â Cas said mischievously.
Dean squinted his eyes at Cas. Two can play that game. âFine. Since youâre in such a bitchy mood this morning, see if I make you breakfast,â he said moving towards the opposite end of the kitchen. He could tell that Cas was eyeing him like a hawk, so he donned an air of indifference as he replied nonchalantly, âAnd here it was I had a taste for French toast too. That honey you made last week wouldâve come in handy.â
Before he could react, Dean was spun around and greeted with a pair of lips meeting his as hands moved around his waist to hold him still. His arms automatically wrapped around Casâs neck in response as he exchanged a passionate kiss with his husband. He wasnât ashamed to admit it to himself now: he missed this. Heâd longed for it while he was gone. Having a younger version of Cas was nice in the beginning, but in the long run, heâd wanted his Cas back. The one who had gone through Heaven, Hell and everything in between to come back to him. Heâd wanted Cas like he needed air to breathe.
I guess it really is true.
âWhatâs true?â Cas asked as they broke apart.
Oh shit. Forgot about that.Â
âForgot about what?â Cas asked.
âNothinâ, angel bee,â Dean said with a dopey smile. He stole a quick peck from Cas before adding, âJust missed you, is all.â
âI missed you too, Dean. I am glad you have returned.â
Absence really did make the heart grow fonder.

Castiel was talking as they made their way to the exit, explaining the text they had come across in the library. Dean Winchester could only understand a portion of what he was saying. He figured Sam and Bobby would have a better grasp on this than he would. Maybe the could find a better plan to deal with these bastards. As Castiel continued rambling, Dean Winchester spared another glance back to his older counterparts, and was greeted with the image of his older self wrapped around his Casâs neck in a very unique position.
Castiel thought he would be mourning the long hair. Or maybe breathing a sigh of relief to see a more familiar style
He didn't think his vessel would react so strongly to THIS
And you can't blame Dean for cutting it (obviously cutting it himself because barbers can't be trusted). He forgot how long he was gonna end up switched in time, and without his nice high-pressure shower, good conditioner, and blow-dryer, the hair was more of a hassle than anything else
This isn't the first time Dean's cut his hair short again, nor is it the first time he's had to deal with an overly flustered Cas (Though, in this case, he can't do what he wants to do with him)
He's just glad Cas didn't immediately poof off to Australia the second he came out of the bathroom
At least Dean didn't shave
Though, with how scratchy it's getting? He's debating it
He hopes he'll get home before it gets worse
Or before he considers marrying this Castiel too with just how darn cute he is
Dean dreads the past. All his time traveling has only ever served to solidify guilt, longing, and 'what ifs' that float in his head. But he's older now. He hasn't moved past it, but he's learn to cope and be more open about it
So when he starts feeling like it's time to go home, he does a few things he wished he got to do.
Dean managed to talk Bobby into a quick game of catch. One that ended with them both tired and grumpy, sharing a beer, and Dean telling Bobby how much of a father he is to Dean
He takes Sam to Jessica's grave. It feels pointless at first, given Sam had no soul, but Dean sat with Sam, who, despite not really understanding what Dean was going on about, listened while his big brother said how he's sorry. And that he's glad Sam stuck by him
Then, he prays to Castiel and takes him on a quick road trip. He plays the mixtape he inevitably gives to Castiel in the future, and quietly drives to a cliffside where the view of the stars would be just perfect.
They sit in silence for a while. It's a silence even Castiel wishes to break, unsure of why Dean insisted on being alone together
But Dean says his peace eventually
He chooses his words. Careful and slow. He keeps his eyes down because he's scared of how easily he would break seeing Cas' younger face.
He's afraid of how much he wants to steal Cas and take him home
Keep Cas safe from his younger self
So he keeps his eyes downcast, hoping Castiel understands him. That Cas believes him
That Cas knows Dean will be waiting for him a decade later, with open arms and a safe home
Castiel had fun messing with Dean of the past, but even he can't stop himself from getting soft seeing Dean barely scarred by life. The only scars on his soul were from hell, and it pains Castiel to know that those scars will be covered by even deeper ones in the coming years
So, when Castiel feels Dean will be taken back to where he belongs, he takes the younger hunter down to the lake near his home and lets himself be vulnerable again
A few stories are exchanged, not enough to rattle the timeline, just enough to make Dean smile and scoff in disbelief
It's a somber moment between them, Castiel can tell Dean is struggling to let himself relax. But it's nice.
But when Dean tells him he's changed, smiling all cheeky like a joke, Castiel is brought back to more than a decade in the past
"Don't ever change."
Castiel remembers the almost desperate tone Dean had spoken those words before passing it off as a jest
He remembers dying through Michael's spear, confessing how he has changed, and how he loves
He remembers a more personal, more vulnerable confession, his moment of true happiness, where he tells Dean of how the hunter has changed him
He remembers confessing his doubts about heaven, sitting on a separate bench from Dean
And in a flash, he's back in the present with a reminder of his past, and there's a dull ache behind his ribs that threatens to spill over, to confess more than what he should
unbeknownst to Dean, whose smile is more beautiful than the sunset
And Castiel can't help but smile back like he did all those years ago
"Don't ever change," Dean asked him
Castiel was never good at following orders
Dean will learn that soon enough
And Castiel hopes he will love him regardless of it
You'd think retirement would've made S16 Dean rusty, but you can't really unlearn certain things
There's always work to be done and monsters to kill. Dean knows that, has always known that, and he knows he needs to have Sammy's back, even when he's a soulless bitch
So when a case lands on their lap (Mysterious disappearances and kidnappings), Dean finds himself falling back into certain... behaviors
The Mark of Cain may be gone, his time in hell may be a distant memory, but the scars they left behind still run deep, deeper than bone.
There is no lust for blood
only residual anger that carries him
Sam witnesses Dean at his worst a lot earlier. He was expecting to tease his older older brother about being rusty and slow
Never did he think Dean would move in such violent ways, staring at danger and death with wide eyes and a sickening determination to finish what was started
The most interesting part was watching Dean get punched and blink away the impact like it was nothing
The aftermath was just as fascinating, as Dean stands over the corpses of monsters he's slain with a rusty axe. Sam keeps his mouth shut when they salt and burn the bodies and merely observes Dean as if he is an entirely different person. Different from the brother he grew up with, and definitely different from the happy, jolly man he came back as
Though Sam does cringe when Cas arrives from Dean's prayer and watches his not-brother-brother act all mushy and sweet with the angel
Castiel is merely confused, while Dean insists they should hug after he gets healed up
