Sam frowned and opened the door, just to be safe, confused by the unusual texts.

On the other side of the door, there was a vast, dense forest. The sun was starting to set, possibly. One of the nearby trees had twine wrapped around its base; the twine stretched off from there somewhere into the woods.

There was a door in her living room. Which was odd, because there hadn't been a door there yesterday. Very odd.

Okay.

As an intern, Christina felt it was her duty to investigate the mysterious door that was suddenly in the middle of her room--especially after she turned on the radio and heard that these doors were apparently everywhere in the town now. Also because she was an intern (and because so many weird things had been happening to interns lately), she knew she had to be prepared. So, before she entered the door, she took steps.

Step one: pack some snacks and water and a recorder into a backpack.

Step two: make sure cell phone and camera are charged.

Step three: Text others so they know where you are. She sent out the same text to a few interns, Cecil, and Sam: One of those doors appeared in my living room. Going to investigate. If not there in time for the parade, please open the door for me or send someone else to. It's likely I wasn't able to get it open again. Doors are weird like that.

It was only when she had taken all of these steps that she opened the door.

On the other side was a forest. It seemed to stretch on for miles. "Seemed to" because the trees were so close together that seeing to the other side was a bit difficult. She grabbed a ball of twine from the kitchen before returning to the door. "Okay," she said. "Vast forest on the other side of an impossible door. All right."

One of the cats approached and meowed indignantly. It was Cece. "Cee, I have to see what's out there," Christina said patiently. "This could be important, you know? I'm an intern. It's my duty to report these things." Cece glared at her. "Oh, don't look at me like that." Christina took a deep breath and stepped through the door. The ground in the forest was soft, and the air was a bit cooler than it was in her apartment. Cece followed her through. "No, kitty, you have to wait in the..."

The door closed behind them.

"...apartment." Whoops. She turned around and tried to open the door, but it wouldn't budge. She went to the other side of the door and tried opening it that way. Nothing. It was locked, and she was stuck. "Oh."

Well, good thing she'd texted the others.

"Someone will come get me," she said aloud. "Someone will come get me." Cece looked up at her and mrowed. "What? I didn't know this was supposed to happen!"

Her phone had exactly one bar, and she wasn't sure it could send texts across dimensions (if she was, indeed, in another dimension). But Cecil had been getting texts from Dana, so it seemed worth a shot. Door does not open from this side. I am in a forest. If you open the door and I'm not there do not enter. Wait for me to return. There was no sense in more people getting lost.

There was also no sense in just waiting around when she could be exploring. And at least she had company.

"Okay, so." She tied the twine around the base of one of the trees. "What direction do you think I should go in, Cece?" Cece's tail twitched and she started walking in a roughly eastward direction. "Good idea."

Christina started walking. She had the feeling she was going to be doing a lot of that for the foreseeable future.

Good thing I wore hiking boots.
