Tim shrugged. "Maybe. But they've probably got their hands full with all the other kids. They won't notice for a few hours." He peered into store fronts, trying to figure out what would be the best place. Sushi was out. Burgers were always welcome. He paused at the front of one place, pointing to a sign in the corner. "Hey look, they serve breakfast all day. Wanna get some pancakes?"
"Pancakes sounds good, actually." Though it would always remind him of Bucky, Steve could put all his thoughts aside for the sake of food. It had been a while since he'd eaten and he could feel the familiar pangs of hunger starting to form. "Well, as long as you won't get into too much trouble. Not certain how it would look if someone who's known for sticking to the law helped another break it." He wasn't certain if the kid knew exactly who he was, though if he'd gone through the Smithsonian he was certain the kid knew who he was talking with.
"That's the only explanation for this mess. Seriously? Your tux is black and red, it's too big in the shoulders, and about two sizes too big everywhere else. Do you even know how to go clothes shopping?"
"I thought it looked ok? And....no shopping isn't my thing..."
"Field trip. I'm here to see the Nation's Capitol, of course. Taking a tour of all the national monuments and treasures." He grinned and began walking down the street, hands in his jacket pockets. "I'm surprised you're here though, considering everything that happened with SHIELD."
So was he, actually. Steve knew he should have left D.C the instant they let him out of the hospital. But something kept him around; something he couldn't really tell the kid. "I try to avoid the national monuments when there are school kids in town," he said, shrugging his shoulders and falling into step with the other. He had a hard enough time slipping into the Smithsonian without people recognising him. Add kids to the mix and it would be a nightmare. "Guess I'm just full of surprises lately. And you certain your chaperons won't miss you?"
"Nah, home's--a bit far away from here." A lot far away, actually, and how he was going to get back would be another interesting story. "I can look someplace up on my phone if you want something specific, or we can just wander and pick something at random."
"Random works for me. Unless you want something specific?" Steve had never been a picky eater; not even as a child. If it was placed in front of him he would eat it. Something that had carried over into adulthood, it seemed. But this particular day he had nothing in particular that he wanted. Food was food so he'd leave it up to the kid. "And should I be asking what you're doing far from home? Curiosity get you again?"
"You sure? I mean, I'd love to hear just why the Director wanted to be in a movie like that. His acting's not that bad, really. Though honestly, I guess since he's a spy, his acting should be good." Tim's watch beeped, reminding him that oh yeah, it was time for lunch. "I don't know about you, but I'm gonna need food if we're gonna keep talking."
"Quite certain. The quote on Nick's gravestone made much more sense after seeing that movie. And all of us knew better than to ask Nick about his days as a spy." Of course, he had to lie to most of the team when they asked if Nick was alive or dead. An easy thing for anyone other than him but then they knew that his focus was on finding Bucky and not the remnants of SHIELD. "I can eat. You know of any place close here or do you need to get home first?"
Tim laughed, a fat grin on his lips. "I'm surprised you've been there. It's a filthy, filthy place sometimes." Okay, sometimes was a bit of a stretch. "Man, you've got decades of work to get through. At least tell me you've taken a peek at some of the classics--Hitchcock, Stephen King, Pulp Fiction."
"Why? Because of when I was born? I've seen war, so I'm not quite as innocent as people seem to think." Though Steve would agree that that particular site wasn't a place he would frequently visit. Not when he remembered some of the things he'd read. "Some of Hitchcock's stuff is better than others. Not a fan of the Birds. Haven't had a chance to read Stephen King but I think Barton showed me Pulp Fiction. He told me not to mention Fury being in it to Nick."
"I bet. There's a lot of slang out there--have you learned chatspeak yet? Emojis?" The idea of Steve Rogers using Emoticons had Tim grinning widely. "Urban Dictionary's a pretty handy place to look through for some words."
"No, I haven't actually learned any of that yet. There is still a lot out there that I need to catch up on." Though Steve was making a mental note to actually look up these things. If only so he could understand a bit more than he did at that moment. "You know I think I've seen that dictionary. It's a very interesting thing."
