I LOVE MY NEIGHBORHOOD. . . I love the neighborhood Irish pub. I love the woman who comes to the there every night to drink red wine + watches sports. I love the man who I see get brunch with his grandchildren on Sunday mornings. I love the man who walks around the neighborhood with a cane and a hump back. He yells passionately in Italian to a woman on her porch from the sidewalk. I love the man who’s dog doesn’t need a leash and wears a t shirt on cold days (the dog). I love the men who remind me of my dead uncles. And I love the women who remind me why I need to keep a career and stay single/miserable until I find the person who will make me happy. I love the subtle (and not so subtle) Italian influence. And how many Italian families sill live there 60-70 years after their ancestors immigrated to Cleveland and chose this neighborhood. I love the diversity of black and brown people and white people. And LGBT families. I love the Irish Catholic men who went to high school around the corner 15, 20, 30 years ago. When the neighborhood looked different but their suburb didn’t. And they never left Cleveland. I love watching the bond formed when they meet a young man my age who graduated from the same catholic all boys school 40 years after them. There’s so many great things about Gordon Square. The bars and the lake and the houses but before the best part is the characters who make up the neighborhood. . . .
