This 1952 ad, posted on Reddit’s r/vintageads by u/Paul-Belgium, is beautiful in its layout and its illustrations.

It’s also inspirational from a stylistic POV; the sketches appear to have been done in ink with watercolor applied to the forms and not necessarily within the sketch lines. A row of trees, for instance, is a grouping of tree sketches with one continuous band of green watercolor across them. Your eye sees trees, even if they aren’t distinct. I feel like even a ham-fisted artist like me can do this style convincingly.

Saw this image posted on the subreddit r/vintageads this morning. It’s a 1930 ad for a particular type of dark amber beer, with a little Dutch wordplay on “bok,” as in a billy goat.

That’s a long aside to my main point that this is a beautiful and illustration of a goat with minimal detail. A white shape, a red stripe, an eye and a nostril. But so very effective, right?

I’m fascinated by the use of splotches of color to illustrate these horses, especially in the Morgan.
