The Plucky Squire is a clever game

This short is part of my Gaming Year in Review 2025 video!

The Plucky Squire is the first game I beat in 2025, and it was an incredible one, too! You should play it.

Transcript:

You play as Jot who is a writer and hero in this storybook along his companions, Violet and Thrash. The main driving force of the story comes when the antagonist, Humgrump, expels Jot physically from the narrative. Like, literally. The game goes from being 2D to 3D.

The 2D aspects within the storybook are RPG adventure-based just like old Zelda games—in fact, that’s why I played The Swords of Ditto last year! Meanwhile, the 3D aspects outside the book tend to be more puzzle-based. I remember absolutely struggling during the stealth sections with the bugs on the table.

My favorite thing, however, is that you’re expected to jump back and forth between the two. Sometimes you flip a page while in 3D to manipulate the 2D map. Sometimes you’re hopping between 2D sticky notes or puzzle pieces that are out of order in 3D.

And, on a more basic level—I love how sometimes you can just swap words around on the page and the storybook would change.

Pikuniku es un juego de plataforma y exploración de puzzles muy colorido y alegre; pero no todos son tan felices dado a que los aldeanos pueden tener miedo y hay una gran conspiración por ser revelada por parte del protagonista Piku.

En éste mundo colorido los personajes tendrán búsquedas inusuales y necesitarás resolver sus puzzles son lastimar a nadie, del mismo modo también hay un alcalde que es líder de una villa llena de aldeanos con preocupaciones y que su mundo perfecto puede caer en caos. Para poder ayudarlos, crea empatía y amistad con ellos con tus buenas acciones. Y además de ello puedes pedirle ayuda a un amigo quién tomará control sobre Niku para enfrentarte a retos en un modo cooperativo local.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, “Hatoful Boyfriend” is a PC game by MIST[PSI]PRESS and Devolver Digital [2014 remake), and was first released in 2011 where you can date a bird. It has spawned two sequels, “In Bad Boys Love” and “Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star,” a web comic and an episodic web series.
