 I focus primarily on the octave shape using a traditional chromatic lick. Using a pattern such as this lick in the video. You practice licks in the same pattern as playing it slow until you can nail it at that tempo, then boost the tempo up slowly but surely. 

 But practicing the same lick the same way over and over again, you gotta vary it up like I've shown you in this video. But no matter what the rhythmic variation is, make sure you can play it at the given tempo before you move up to the next tempo. Till next time.

 Todays lesson talks about playing triplets and string crossing with you right hand whilst playing with three fingers. Triplets are pretty easy to play. Just watch the video.

 String crossing goes kind of hand in hand with my talk of economy picking from yesterday, except a little different. I'm not talking about going from one string to the next string above or below it. I'm talking about jumping over strings. You need to be very cautious when playing with this technique simply because of the dangers of sounding unwanted strings. But I explain it pretty easily and hope you all get it and love the lesson.

 So, like last week, we're doing kind of a themed lesson week plan. We're talking about three finger technique. You want to be very careful when playing eighths and sixteenths using three fingers. You can use the technique quite easily, but you are plucking with an odd number of fingers, so don't get confused (I doubt you will, but it's still important to mention).

 The other important fact about three finger technique when playing across strings, is the switching of your start finger per measure going across strings. I discuss this issue in the video, but I'll explain it again here. The lesson within the lesson is economy picking.

 Economy picking basically is when you are using one motion coming from one string to the next string, you use that motion. So if you are a guitarist using a upstroke going from a higher string to a lower string, you keep that upstroke motion going to the lower string. Same is true for a bassist using fingerstyle technique. If you end a passage on a higher string with say your index finger, you simply rake that index finger to pluck the next note on the lower string. I've only made sense of this with fingerstyle going from a higher string to a lower string. But if you feel like you can make this work going from a lower string to a higher string, do so and teach the teacher.

 Experimentation is the key to advancement. So experiment with everything I've posted so far, and see what you can do with it!

 Many, many people want to play the bass like Geddy Lee. I've been explaining how to practice and refine his technique so that EVERYONE can play like he does. Because no matter what, if it was recorded, anyone can play it! But so far I've shown you only how to develop his technique using the chromatic scales and variants that I've shown you. And in every post about those chromatic exercises I've said, DON'T ONLY USE THESE CHROMATIC EXERCISES BECAUSE YOU WILL HURT YOURSELF! But what else are you supposed to use? The answer, is scales!

 This video discusses the use and practice of one octave scales on one string to further develop this technique of playing with only one finger. WATCH IT! the explanation of major scale construction (which is the first kind of scale we will be working on) is fully explained and how you can put everywhere on the bass. Be sure to maintain smooth even CONSISTENT strokes every time you strike the string. Start slow, than build up the tempo so you can put it to real life use by playing songs.
