"Devil Gate Drive" - Suzi Quatro

Come alive in Let's Do It, my personal favourite singles from 1954-76.

Chinn and Chapman wrote glam rock stompers, rock 'n' roll with added glitter, a bit of playfulness, and many of the rough edges filed off. A slightly milquetoast version of what other acts were doing at the time, but performed with more joy in three minutes than Led Zeppelin managed in their entire career.

Suzi Quatro turned a decent record into a megahit: her voice snarls through the verses, her demeanour adds a bagload of attitude, and there's more than a bit of cock-blocking for the chorus. What exactly does go on down at Devil Gate Drive, other than it's not the sort of thing you'd want to tell prissy Aunt Joan.

Looks always sold rock 'n' roll music. Elvis Presley's gyrating hips, Mick Jagger's snoggable lips, Ricky Nelson's smouldering good looks, the way Cliff Richard would gently brush your pinkie while taking afternoon tea. Suzi Quatro looked like she'd come out of the poster on your bedroom wall and show you a really good time.
