To create a chimera, a higher, than human, life form they used philosoppher's stone so the body would establish a strong bond, heal and choose between the host - if animal instincts wins over human mind, then the chimera is a failure.
Chimeras ended up living longer, healing faster and lived the moment, afraid of something. Their personalities made a full spin on what they were before, the meek soldiers who almost pleaded people to stop the Ishvalian war turned into vulgar and idle people. Emotions are limited, on hold, on leash. What matters most is to survive.
