Kisko khabar kaun hai wo, anjaan hai koi Gumnaam hai koi....🪽
“The devil came to court a lady fair, And what did he offer to the maiden there? A silver pin! A silver pin! To pin the lace under her chin.”
The chanted words echoed merrily down the street, rising and falling with the scuffing beat of the skipping rope. It was a chilly afternoon with a watery sun, but no one cared for cold when running and jumping. The two eldest children held the rope and three of the little ones jumped, answering the singers with breathless voices.
“The devil came to court a lady fair, And what did he offer to the maiden there? A nine stringed bell! A nine stringed bell! To call her seven servants well.”
High above in the sky a flock of birds cawed down at the playing children, drowned out by their laughter as another one of them jumped into the rope and had to stand aside.
“The devil came to court a lady fair, And what did he offer to the maiden there? A silken gown! A silken gown! With nine stripes up and nine stripes down.”
Another boy tripped, leaving only one of them skipping triumphantly in place when the song started up again:
“The devil came to court a lady fair, And what did he offer to the maiden there? A kist of gold! A kist of gold! To comfort her as she’d grow old.”
“Luca!”
All heads turned and the rope stopped, falling slack to the ground behind Luca’s feet as she made the last jump. Her mother stood on the stone steps in front of the house. In her long striped dress with lace trim at the collar. “Time to come in, love,” she called. “Your dad’s come home from his business trip.”
Luca gave a shout of joy. “Did he bring me something?”
“You’ll have to come in and see!” her mother laughed.
“Yes, Mum!” Luca chimed and she came running, fluttering a hand at her friends as she went.
“We can play after dinner, yeah?” one of them called among the chorus of ‘byes’.
“Yeah! Or tomorrow!” Luca promised and with that she darted past her mother and inside the house, leaving the others to their excited speculations about what she would come back with.
Luca’s father always brought the best presents.
