         JOSIE  LOOKS  AWAY  , guilt weighing  heavily  in  her  expression  at  the  question . Penelope  accused  Lizzie  of  more  than  her  sister  ever  deserved  ,  but   maybe  she  was  onto  something  this  time    ––––   not   that  Josie   ever  intended  to  admit  it  to  herself   ,  much   less  out  loud  .  ❝    I wasn’t  ,    ❞  she  says   ,  tone   falling  short  of  defensive   .  Her  problems  didn’t  matter   ;   she  had  better  coping  mechanisms  than   Lizzie   did   .   She   could  handle   keeping   it  all   inside  .  In  fact  ,  she  had   to  ,  if   she  was  going  to  take   care  of  her   sister   when  her   fuse   got   too  short    .

         MAYBE  THERE  WAS  just  too  much  to  bottle  up  at  this  point  .  The  siphoner  exhales  ,  gaze  reluctant  to  meet  Penelope’s  again  but  she  does  ,  lips  pressing  into  a  tight  line  .  ❝  Look  ,  there  are  room  for  people  who  don’t  need  to  put  their  feelings  out  into  the  world  ,  too  .  If  I  don’t  want  to  share  ,  that’s  on  me  .  You  have  no  right  to  ––– ❞  she  stops  abruptly  ,  forcing  air  into  her  lungs  to  calm  herself  down  ,  ❝  You  don’t  have  a  right  to  say  anything  anymore  .  I  don’t  need  you  to  feel  sorry  for  me  or  defend  me  or  whatever  you’re  trying  to  do  here  .  ❞  Josie  falls  quiet  for  a  moment  ,  big  doe  eyes  looking  at  the  witch  her  sister  had  nicknamed  ‘  Satan  ’  .  ❝  Just  .  .  .  keep  this  between  us  ,  okay  ?  You  owe  me  that  much  .  ❞

      AT FIRST , SIGNING up had been nothing more than a whim , perhaps out of boredom more than anything . She never really thought much of the dating app ; in fact , she knew that most of the people who used it were really only looking for casual hook-ups . But it was a way of meeting new people and , in all honesty , she doubted she’d have to compete with Lizzie if she used the app in private and that alone was a brought a guilty sort of pleasure that ultimately had her uploading her photos and a short biography . 

      BUT THEN SHE’D met a guy that was absolutely perfect , in every way , shape and form . It was like the person on the other end understood her completely and Josie hated to admit it , but she was starting to fall madly for this person . They’d never even met , but the conversations brought a blush to her cheeks each time and seeing his name pop up on the screen made her heart beat just a little faster .

penelope  ,  who  had  been  standing  by  the  mirror  inspecting  her  reflection ( perhaps with her  lips  pursed  in  an  instagram-worthy  pout  ,  perhaps  not  )  turned  in  the  direction  of  the  bed  with  an  eyebrow  arched  inquisitively .

                                           ❛ what’s  this  about  ?? ❜

slowly  ,  she  made  her  way  over  to  the  bed  where  her  girlfriend  SOULMATE  sat  , seeming  to  almost  glow  in  the  light  of  the  early  morning  sun  .  penelope  crawled  up  the  bed  to  kneel  in  front  of  her  ,  placing  a  delicately  manicured  fingernail  beneath  her  chin  and  tilting  it  up  to  press  a  featherlight  kiss  against  her  lips .

               there  was  so  much  that  she  could  say.

the  other  girl  was  FAMILY to  her .  when  she  woke  up  in  the  morning  ,  josie  was the  first  thing  she  thought  about  —  like  clockwork .  like  gravity  making  her  world  keep turning . penelope  didn’t  love  often  ,  but  when  she  did  she  loved  with  everything  she  had  .  she  would  have  moved  mountains  to  make  her  happy , to  see  her  smile  or  hear  her  laugh  or  say  i  love  you , too  .

but  less  was  more  .

      ANXIETY WAS A funny thing . It made it more difficult , of course , in situations like the one they were in . Soulmates sounded like a beautiful concept –––– on paper , at least . But in a world where the person you’re meant to be with is cosmically chosen for you , with no input of your own , it could make you think . If they were soulmates by a higher power’s doing , who was to say any of this was truly REAL ? How could anyone be sure that they would be with their partner if it weren’t for all of that ? 

      HER BODY WAS easily pliable under Penelope’s touch , head tilting back and lips all too eager to respond to the kiss . It lasted a few seconds before Josie broke the kiss and ducked her head away . ❝ It’s nothing , ❞ Josie dismissed her quickly , offering a wave of the hand as if she could physically slap the thought away from her before it could invade her thoughts any more than it already had .

      BUT HOW MUCH of that was real ? What part of the way her body responded was true , what part of the way her thoughts both grew hazy and incredibly clear made sense ? On paper , every part of the way Josie reacted to Penelope should indicate that they were perfect for each other , that they were soulmates . . . But if it really was so perfect , why did she even bother questioning any of it ?
