A Field of Hyacinths Under the Sun
O' Melodic Muses,
Sing to me a wondrous song
Of the passionate love
And beautiful harmonies
That were shared between
The attractive Spartan prince, Hyacinthus,
And the Radiant God of Light, Apollo!
“There once was a Spartan prince,
The Beautiful Hyacinthus,
Who was forced to train under the War God, Ares.
The god was harsh, but loving,
For he saw so much potential in the prince.
Yet the expectations placed upon him were heavy
For he didn't even want to fight;
He'd rather frolic in the fields under Helios' warm light.
And there was a Radiant God of Light,
Apollo, the Leader of the Muses,
Who would travel across the land,
Admiring the beauty of the mortals
And the world they lived in.
The god grew lonesome
For he wanted another who saw the world
Through the same eyes as he did.
It was under Helios’ warm light
That Apollo stumbled upon the Spartan prince
Lying in a field of fragrant flowers.
Young Hyacinth had skipped his training
For he needed to take some time
To admire the wonders of the world.
He would gaze upon the mortals, animals, and trees;
The valleys, mountains, and seas.
Upon first seeing Hyacinthus,
Apollo whispered praise to Aphrodite
For bringing such a masterpiece
To the world below.
The God of Light grew enamored
With the young Spartan prince
For they shared a similar view of beauty
And held so much emotion in their breast.
The Radiant God and Beautiful Mortal
Had been pierced by the arrows
Of Eros' deep love and passion.
Every time they snuck off to meet,
Their connection only deepened
And their time apart grew more painful.
Yet both of them cherished
Every second of those secret moments.
Apollo breathed new life into Hyacinthus,
For when he was with the god,
The prince never felt more alive.
With Apollo, Hyacinth could be himself.
He could release all the emotions
That he held so close to his breast.
He was free of those heavy expectations
And able to just enjoy the world around him.
Their love was truly the definition
Of a youthful whirlwind romance.
But, mortals, do not doubt
That their love was anything but extraordinary.
While their harmonies were cut short,
The memories of their love live on
In the beautiful flowers
That young Hyacinth left behind.”
