His father wanted him to be a girl.
His mother didn’t want him.
There was a surrogate involved.
So maybe they had money, and Dad wanted a child, Mom didn’t want to be pregnant or really have much to do with a kid. That was all Dad. So they used a surrogate. Mom was cold. She never wanted him, never considered him hers. It was her DNA, her child biologically, but she said no.
She divorced his dad when he was young, left them both for bigger and better things. Never looked back. He tried to contact her a few times, but she never wrote back. Lexi knows this, of course. She also knows that he doesn’t know her current name, since she got remarried and changed her last name. Lexi knows her new name, and also where she is.
So he lived with his dad for awhile, and his dad loved him. But his dad isn’t always the best person, and he wanted a girl, and he needed money. And I actually think there is more here that I should have seen earlier. I’ve had a sense that one of his parents was LGBT for awhile now, but I could never get more than that. His father was transgender. Male to female. Not out to his son, but in the dark of night, she would come out. And the town where they lived, it wasn’t a place where that was an acceptable thing to be. She got in with the wrong crowd. She made friends with the only other people in town who understood, and they were sex workers. Which is not a bad thing to be, it’s just... they were discriminated against. Sex crimes. Victims. There was a big man in town with a kink, and when someone found out, he turned against them. All of them. Including Evan’s dad. Put them in jail. Took away the kids.
I should name his parents. His dad’s name is something gender neutral. Hayden. Bailey. Devan. His dad’s name is Devan. As a female, she went by Devyn. Devyn Hemming.
Devyn was a sex worker for a very short period of time. Only a few months. It was the other sex workers (only one of whom was trans, the others were just her crew), that were being targeted by the rich guy in town. Devyn was just there at the wrong time. I don’t even know if Devyn was a sex worker. Or just hung out with them. Devyn went to jail, and Evan was removed from her care. He went into foster care. He felt weird about his father, because the person he knew wasn’t the same person that went to jail. Or the same person that came out of jail. He’s talked to Devyn since her release, but was never in her custody again. Visitation was a thing, for years. But Devyn kept getting in trouble with the law. People went after her, and she hit them back. She learned how to defend herself. So some assault charges over the years.
After he became a cop, Evan went back and helped Devyn out. Got her out of trouble, and found her a new life where she didn’t have to be a criminal anymore. But he feels weird about spending too much time with her, doesn’t always think of her as a parent. He’s confused because he had always called her dad, but that was before she’d come to terms with who she was, and now he feels like he should call her Mom, and he barely remembers his mother to begin with, and it’s just a weird thing. He tends to avoid it, in general. He would invite Devyn to the wedding though.
I believe his mother’s name is Elizabeth. It was once Elizabeth Hemming, but it isn’t anymore. It’s Elizabeth Moore now.
So that solves that. I still have to figure out some foster care stuff and ages at the times of different events. But that’s cool that I know all that now.
I’m vaguely hesitant about the idea of making a trans character a sex worker, but at the same time, this particularly story has it’s fair share of trans character. The first one in the series was a non-binary cop so... I’m just going to go with it.
