They’re not a full blown restaurant, but they have burgers and other bar food. She was always sweet to Dexter so he would sometimes slip some alcohol into her sodas when she begged him to ignore that she was underage.

It was 8:30pm on a Wednesday and the bar was full. You’d think, given the tiny population digit of that town, that he’d only ever have a few regulars wasting away on those ancient, chipped stools. But new interest in Braedon had sprung up and anyone who was anyone had to show their face, to make an appearance, to listen to the gossip.

Who had done it? Where did she go? Was she still alive? Was it a runaway case?

Dexter had heard it all and it was always depressing. He could feel a migraine coming on and they didn’t close until midnight that night. It was a little late for the location, but Dexter liked staying open for the occasional tired trucker that passed through. He liked their stories.

Not tonight. Not when Natasha was all they talked about and the buzz of the neon beer lights were digging into his skull like so many shovels.

“You okay, buddy?” Bobby, a regular in his late fifties, asked him. “You look like you need to join us."

"Ah, just a headache,” he said, rubbing his temples with one hand. He knew what a migraine would lead to - twelve hours in bed with no intention to get up and face the world - but Bobby didn’t. Didn’t have to. Dexter smiled through it. “Can’t keep listening to you diehard Huskers fans pretend like Nebraska is gonna win a single game this year."

Dexter laughed to groans and jeers of, "watch it, boy,” as the men began arguing with him about college football. He was always good at that, Dexter. Steering the conversation somewhere else. Averting the attention. Hiding behind the curtain.

“Listen, buddy, I’m gonna buy you a beer and you’re gonna drink it and listen to me,” Bobby insisted, pointing down to the beer cooler behind Dexter. With a shake of his head, Dexter grabbed a Budweiser and dutifully cracked it open.

“I’m all ears, Bob,” he told the man. “You know being proven wrong is what I’m best at.”

Dexter is definitely a giant nerd. He’s super into video games and has a monthly D&D campaign going with a couple guys from town that he holds on Thursday nights at the bar.

He’s a natural storyteller. Dexter tells ridiculous stories about everything - it’s one of the things that makes him a great bartender. A lot of his stories probably aren’t true, but they’re usually entertaining.

He really doesn’t reveal anything about his personal life. Possibly how he became such a great storyteller, he goes to great lengths to avoid talking about anything that makes him feel vulnerable. He likes listening to other people’s woes, but doesn’t give up much of his own.

He was the school mascot in high school.

He hosts a podcast called Beer and Other Things I Like, where he talks about… beer and other things he likes. He has 500 subscribers so far which he thinks is pretty dope.

Got his bipolar disorder from his father, who was often violent when he was in a depressive episode. Dexter is terrified of becoming like him.

dexter levski has always seen himself as a people person. a little eccentric, a little hyper, he was the class clown growing up, making everyone around him smile and laugh. it was his favorite thing to do - turn someone’s dark day into a happy one, and he had a natural talent and charisma for it.  everyone had always assumed he’d go off to college and become someone important - a psychologist, maybe, or even a teacher or a politician. but he surprised everyone by moving into an apartment on main street and taking up a job at the one and only bar in town, forgoing higher education to learn the craft of mixology in a real environment.  not that the folks of braedon need anything fancy. for most of them, they’ll take a whiskey or a beer, but dexter doesn’t mind. his place in the center of braedon lets him see and talk to everyone, find out their ups and downs, celebrate their wins and console their losses. and through the years, he’s managed to climb up the ladder - he still prefers to work the closing shift at the bar most nights, but he’s also a part-owner now, giving the original owner a break and allowing them to leave braedon for the first time in their lives.  he doesn’t have too many co-workers - a couple people around town work part time during the day, mostly - but the bar just seems off place without dexter’s bright smile behind the bar anyways.  it’s not that he doesn’t have bad days himself - his dark moments are brutal, and there have been times he’s been almost catatonic in bed for days without moving - but he ignores that side of himself. after all, if he focused on the negative, how would he ever get to create a little more sunshine in everyone else’s life?

yale jacobson // in high school, dexter knew yale was going through a lot. a brand new baby sister in the house, a mom who was sooner drunk or high instead of showing up to parent teacher conferences, or worse - but dexter was there to help pull her away from the bad swings, to sit under the bleachers and smoke cigarettes and weed while they talked about the future. now that she’s back, he feels like there’s so much more to yale that he never really understood. but dexter’s always there to offer his friendship again, and something tells him yale will need it now more than ever.   eva byers // being the only two real ‘business owners’ their age in braedon, eva and dexter spend a lot of time together. sometimes they work through their budgeting and finances together over beers in a corner booth at the bar, sometimes they just talk about anything that comes to mind. she’s a confidante, and one of the few who can pull dexter out of his ‘dark days’ - more importantly, one of the few who even know they exist.
