I think Starfleet Academy has done a lot with its shortened season compared to the twenty plus seasons of yore, but reaching the end of the academic year within nine episodes, cramming the spring semester into just a couple of episodes…

This is where it really feels like we’ve missed out on the things happening offscreen.

I miss low stakes episodes that are just about characters having small steps in their development, instead of it having to happen packed in alongside other characters’ growths.

The breathing room has been lost. I just want more time to spend on little things, not just the big picture.

As much as I want Tilly to be a full time part of Starfleet Academy, I do like her as the kick in the pants, the disruption in the “normal” that the cadets have built, especially as they deal with their trauma.

Here’s hoping we get more of Professor Tilly in the future.

I will only appreciate this seeming recurring thread of Uhura mentoring this cadet if it does result in Uhura giving her a proper smackdown, as like a story arc about "being friendly doesn't mean not standing up for yourself" (considering how we do see Uhura being fully capable of standing up for herself when being taken advantage of in TOS).

Because really, that introduction to this cadet? Considering how rude she was to a superior officer, Uhura would have been within her rights to knock the points right off her ears as a result. I know Starfleet has always been very mild military in its portrayal of its structure, but the way this cadet is acting towards her superior officer? Yeah, that's the kind of attitude that even Mariner would have demanded she get sent to the brig for her insubordination.

Even if he was technically a hallucination, I'm still gonna call the appearance of Sam Kirk in The Griffin Incident character development. After all, it was based on Jim's own knowledge and feelings for Sam, AND we got proper confirmation of there being multiple Kirklings on his side of the family (which, considering how loose TOS was with continuity in the early days that established them, had been something potentially in question).

Which, YAY, I've been waiting for them to do more with Sam than comic relief for like the entire run of SNW.

Also MAN does Sam's canonical death in Operation: Annihilate get all the more heartwrenching knowing that just a couple of years prior, Jim was shown a vision of it.

On a separate yet related note, OW that related punch of La'An actually predicting David's death.

Oh Starfleet Academy, you dug a deeper cut than I was expecting, and I love you for acknowledging the unsaid of Voyager.

Honestly, the moment I saw her sit in her captain’s chair, I knew Captain Nalah Ake was destined to be a bisexual icon.
