So fun fact: I have an AU I work on sometimes in which Edelgard has amnesia and grows up with Byleth in the mercenary band. I think the original intent was to look at how Edelgard would have turned out without her trauma and it's been really fun to work on. That attitude we see in Dimitri's flashback really comes through.
I figured Those Who Slither would still have been looking for her and would have found her if she remembered her real name, so they end up calling her Eddy instead. She and Byleth ended up having this relationship that is equal parts mother/daughter and being sisters and it's great.
Damn, that's a really interesting idea!
I wonder how El would feel about her physical appearance. She's got amnesia, but she's definitely still got the scars from the experiments; how would she feel about knowing full well that something terrible happened to her that she cannot remember ? would she seek answers ? Also, how would the empire fare without its living heiress ? does ionius search for her or does he stay the useless coward he always was ? would rhea understand things about twstid's involvement in edelgard's suffering and amnesia before she does, because of her knowledge on them ?
But also, one of the first things that came to mind was: what about Hubert. He doubtless would've been looking for his best friend. Without her, he might have gone off the deep end. So... Would he end up taking her narrative role of wanting to overthrow an unjust system which, for all he knows, let Edelgard disappear from the surface of the Earth without any justice served ? Would Dimitri remember El more easily if her personality was closer to the one she had before she was Traumatized As Fuck? And would Edelgard ever remember ?
A really interesting concept and so many questions to be answered
@rubytactician 's OC Anastasia, who she thought out to be the eldest of the original Hresvelg siblings, got me thinking about how Aline in particular would react upon discovering that one of her elder siblings survived years after the facts. After all, for all Adel, El, Loki and her know she is the oldest survivor of the experiments, even though she was in no way the heir to the Imperial throne. She was already a big sister, but she had to become the big sister. The one they could all rely on, even Edelgard, in their darkest moments.
I... think it would be complicated for her. She'd be absolutely overjoyed to find out that their older sibling is alive. She'd be so thankful to the Goddess, if only she still believed in her. But... I also think she would never be able to be a little sister again, not exactly. At least, not in the way she was before. She would rather take care of her older sibling than let herself be taken care of. And while that's something she'd be accutely aware of, since she is very self-aware, I don't think she would be able to unpack all that trauma. She needs to feel in control and to feel like she can protect the ones she loves, and she's ready to take the responsibility. A bit like Luisa in Encanto, who is the cadet.
It's a bit like with Adel. Before the war, both of them had agreed to be the steady figures their sister could rely on. But even Adel relies on his big sis, while she doesn't really rely on anybody for comfort. She'd act that way with any other sibling, even an older one.
So, yeah. Pretty angsty but what do you want. xD I wish this would be better articulated but my brain is mush.
Everyday I hate learning about the world economy but everyday I'm also very thankful I do cause then I can shit on neoliberalism a little more
