assumptions i made about tumblr DGS fandom before i showed up here:

kazuma = the hot boy on campus ✅ correct

asoryuu = a top ship ✅ correct

baroryuu = a huge ship that’s as obvious as narumitsu if wildly different ❌ incorrect

herlock/ryuu = a huge ship, of course he slept with his landlord c’mon ❌ incorrect I still don’t even know if there’s a tag for this

homumiko = this is just that one weird rare pair that my sweetie and i see clearly but NO ONE ELSE is going to be into this ❌ wildly incorrect my dear fellow

asobaro / baroaso = totally snuck up on me and i am addicted, at least someone else will be too?? ✅ correct it’s like ten of us

baroasoryuu = almost no one will appreciate the greatness ✅ sighs and clings to rare OT3

no one = will draw every effin detail of nuri’s amazing character designs every time so i can just be lazy myself right ❌ cries in herlock’s buckles

Sorry in advance for the rambling but the more I think about Ryunosuke’s characterization the more I’m like hoooly shit because first of all, he and Asougi are basically two halves of the same character. Ultimately they’re one unit trying to fulfill the same goal. Asougi initiates the goal (to change the Japanese legal system, plus the secret goal of avenging his father’s death), Ryuu carries out the goal, at the end they achieve finding out the truth about Asougi Genshin together. Then post-canon is Ryuu going back to Japan to achieve the other goal of reforming Japanese judicial system.

AND THEN they spiced it up with some ‘Ryunosuke trying to find his own purpose’ in the storyline. I mean just think about the psychology of a person who based their entire purpose on fulfilling a dead friend’s mission just to find out that the said friend is still alive. But that’s also why I think the ending is satisfying because Ryunosuke had a choice, and whatever he chooses, that would be something important to him because well. That’s kind of the first time someone really gave him a choice. Obviously he chose to go back to japan though, because they still had the ‘reforming judicial system’ thing to do

I don’t know, I just think Naruhodo Ryunosuke is such a protagonist

ACD Canon’s Copyright

OK so I decided to look into the ridiculous state of the ACD canon’s copyright again and because US copyright protects certain things up to 95 years (HOLY HELL), ten Holmes stories remain copyrighted in the US, the latest going up until 2022.

"The Adventure of the Creeping Man" (1923)

"The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire" (1924)

"The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" (1924)

"The Adventure of the Illustrious Client" (1924)

"The Adventure of the Three Gables" (1926)

"The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" (1926)

"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (1926)

"The Adventure of the Retired Colourman" (1926)

"The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" (1927)

"The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" (1927)

Just add 95 onto that publish year and you’ve got when the copyright expires.  Add onto this that the Estate itself had at one point claimed that “if anything remained copyrighted, it was ALL copyrighted” (that was shot down by various courts, thank GOD); and had also sued an author for writing a book about Holmes’ retirement (adapted into the film “Mr. Holmes”) because he pulled details from these last 10 stories...we have what I think may be the Main Fear for localizing DGS.

I know two of these stories have details--even if only very small ones--referenced in DGS.  “Three Garridebs” gets a mention via John and Joan’s surname in the first game, while “Veiled Lodger” gets a light nod via the blue bottle filled with poison meant for suicide in the second.  The copyrights expire for those stories in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

I don’t know if there are other smaller references to the events in these stories, or even to Sherlock’s actions, in the game, but given how god damn persistent the Estate is....even if there’s a chance DGS could fly under the radar in the US, I wouldn’t be surprised if Capcom didn’t wanna risk that.

I'm thinking about the scene in DGS where Asougi cut off Auchi's chonmage. Supposedly DGS is set somewhere around the turn of the century which would be after the Meiji Restoration, where people were encouraged to abandon traditional Japanese-style hair (e.g. cut off their chonmage). Some were even made fun of for keeping a chonmage. The fact that Auchi was that upset his hair was cut...he was very traditional guy and still really liked his hair. Honestly it aligns with modern Auchi's (or the Paynes) since they're all supposed to have ridiculous ass hair. It's not a groundbreaking observation but I find it hilarious

DGS Mysteries Revisited

I wrote a post upon finishing DGS about the mysteries that remained.  I figured I’d revisit it now that I’ve finished DGS2. There are some fun things in there.

So, Megundal was Asshole Of The Year, but I honestly think I’d need to replay DGS to get a more complete picture as to why he’d want to steal THIS information specifically.

Gregson being put on this mission solo is REMARKABLY interesting considering he’s a target on the list, but I also remember him knowing about the contents--or at least, really not wanting you to play it in court. I highly doubt Vortex woulda told him anything, given what the contents meant, but Sherlock sure as hell did.

Barok’s mysteries are all solved....or, well. Almost. Barok’s physical scar remains a mystery, though at this point it’s not too much of a stress to guess that it’s the result of one of hte many, MANY times Barok has been attacked in the past due to the Shinigami thing.

Watson tho.....how can one person be so damn WRONG. He was NOT Iris’s father, and he was NOT Sherlock’s partner, and it wasn’t any case that made him leave. He was certainly still Yuujin’s friend, though.

I was hilariously correct on this one--at least, in that none of these things were truly “mysteries” in the game. Dmitri was never mentioned again. The World Fair was less a mystery and more an important backdrop for Vortex’s plans to have England’s forensics might known to the world. And with regards to Karuma, tho the sword itself wasn’t a mystery, we DID get that little tidbit about the relationship to the von Karma family getting solved, and the sword also played a part in the mystery of Klimt’s missing will.

ALL of these were answered pretty handily by the end.  I even managed to guess that Asougi’s “True Mission” was related to the info on the disc, though it was admittedly not directly: Asougi’s personal mission was to find out about his father, and accepting that assassination request was his ticket to England. (Can we think about how remarkable that sentence is, just for a moment?)

I’m interested to see what kinds of details are hidden in the first game that can now come to light via hindsight...I grow more and more interested in a DGS replay by the day...

okay hold on i wanna talk about how takumi is framing the mystery surrounding kazumaybe

you have two ways this could go, generally speaking

who is this masked disciple?

is this masked disciple <Person A>?

and i just wanna express my appreciation @ takumi for going with the second option here.

my reason for that is mostly how fandom reacted to seeing him: IMMEDIATELY after a clear shot of him was revealed, fandom compared him to asougi. IMMEDIATELY.

that susato and ryuu both also, near immediately, pick up on the similarities avoids a ton of traps and frustrations we’d otherwise be saddled with.

why don’t they recognize him? why aren’t they picking up on this when so much else about asougi’s “death” is suspect?

allowing susato and ryuu to immediately come to the conclusion “that must be asougi” makes their confrontation with sherlock that much more visceral; if they failed to notice and only talked to sherlock based on the news mamemomi provided susato, i don’t doubt most players would be exceedingly frustrated at susato and ryuu for failing to recognize one of the most important dots in this puzzle

framing it with “is that really, truly asougi?” more easily allowed us to take on ryuu’s role in the game, his doubts and his hopes resonate with the player’s, they become more visceral and emotional, and it was a brilliant move imo

azumi asked me a Thing and i want to ask the couple sherlockians i know that follow this, But

over the past couple cases, sherlock has demonstrated money issues. he works at madame rozaic’s bc rent is Soon, and he mentions at the beginning of this case that he’ll take any job because rent is due Literally Tomorrow

he makes a joke when talking to anna that “the detective work is reward enough” (and then attempts to suavely backtrack like “but just in case i will remember you mentioning you will pay Anything if i find ur husband”)

so i was wondering if this was a reference, or maybe takumi poking at canon sherlock’s philosphy, or what?
