okay so an idea: A homeowner who's diabetic and has a service dog (what breed it is is up to you!) that acts to help with homeowner's diabetes and being an emotional support dog.
Before homeowner got their dateavators, their dog had been helping out as it always does. From notifying the owner if their blood sugar is low—grabbing their medications or getting food from the fridge to help rise balance the blood sugar.
And when homeowner is feeling down in the dumps or their mental stability is going downhill, the dog would stay by their side—providing comfort, company and affection.
I think the kitchen objects like Stefan, Freddy, etc would be able to help out both of them since they probably would be more aware that their homeowner has diabetes. And maybe the other objects would respect to treat the doggo as a service animal and not like a normal pet since service animals have a job to do and takes it seriously.
AWWWWWEE YESSSS I will be drawing the characters with a dog at some point thanks for that brain worm
So just to clarify, I am going of the diabetes my grandmother had (god rest her soul) and I’ve had some time with services dogs from talking to their owners. But I am in no way an expert on either of these subjects!
Sweet as Sugar
Gn reader x date everything fic
You aren’t quite sure why Ray, your service dog, was barking at thin air, but you assumed it was the same as a cat staring at a wall. You had no reason to think he was barking at the manifestation of your fire place, who was doing his best to make sure your dog could not touch him.
Dante loved dogs, and he would’ve loved to pet yours, but he for sure was not gonna be a reason your dog caught fire. Dante wasn’t even aware he could climb the corner of the wall, but he’s grateful he could regardless.
When you first walked in you had taken Ray’s service vest of for a bit so he could get a familiar with the house, you had just eaten something and written everything down so there was no worries about needing him for a bit.
On the other hand all the objects were living the dream getting to pet your very well trained and behaved doggo. Fantina nearly died from the cuteness, as did Dunk and several others who seemed to hide it a bit better.
After a few weeks the first shocks of having a dog fizzled out and were replaced for concern of you when Ray would bark and you’d stop what you were doing to eat something. Farya had surmised you had diabetes of some sort and that Ray was your service dog the first time it happened, at least it was one of her hypothesis.
Now Ray was the object of not shock and awe, but absolute praise for being best boy and doing “such a good job! Ohh the big strong working dog, yes you areeee!” (Eddie will deny he ever said it and you can’t make him admit it)
While Ray was meant to simply comfort you in times of distress, he was also very good at seeing the others distress as well and would go sit with them when they needed it. His presence actually helped Harper and Dirk stop fighting as much since, they in no way wanted to fight in front of such a sweet boy. What once was shouting and blaming became, quiet communication as soon as for paws pitter pattered their way to the laundry room. You weren’t sure why Ray decided that on your dirty clothes in the laundry was a prime napping location but hey, dog wants what a dog wants.
Then after you got Skylar, you made sure to give the sweet boy more sweets, it was the least you could do knowing how many people he was actually helping all the time. Luckily everyone else in your house was willing to help you too. The kitchen gang were all so excited to look into diabetic diets and whip up everything they could to fit your dietary restrictions. You were honestly shocked at what they could do, it was a sight to behold.
Several others all made a conscious effort to be aware of when you may need to eat, suddenly everyone had a snack in their pocket or a stash of some kind of candy somewhere in case you needed something. It was all very sweet of them, and it was worth it in their eyes since you and your pupper brought so much light into their life from the moment you first arrived.
And once they’re realized? Oh god you need to put a tracker for treats so he doesn’t get over fed. Suffice to say your puppet is very happy, and so are you for having so many people to rely on.
You're awakened from a fitful sleep by the pinch of your lancet poking your pinky finger. You furrow your eyebrows and peel open your eyes in confusion.
“Sorry,” Eddie mutters as he glances away from the glucose monitor to look at you. He is still in his uniform and you realize he must have just gotten home from his shift. “Your dexcom expired about an hour ago.”
“Crud. I didn't hear the alarm.” You glance around trying to find your phone.
“You left it on the kitchen island,” Eddie explains. “You're at 52. Do you want a juice?”
You groan. You've been fighting a cold for a couple days now and it's been miserable. “It's going to make me more nauseous.”
Eddie grabs something off the nightstand and holds it up. “I got these for you.” He shows you a box of glucose tabs before he peels open the box and pulls two out. “They will dissolve on your tongue. Hopefully it won't upset your stomach.”
You lift your hand and cross your fingers. He holds a tab up and you just open your mouth for him to feed them to you. “Thanks,” you mumble around it.
“Okay, now this,” Eddie reaches for the dexcom stuck to your right tricep. He carefully peels up enough of the adhesive to get a grip of it. “Count down or just go?”
“Just do it– ow!” You whine when it stings.
He leans over and kisses your shoulder before he opens an alcohol swab and cleans the old site.
You expect him to grab the new one for you to put on but he surprises you instead by asking, “Where do you want it?”
You shift and point to your left forearm. “Right here.”
He nods and opens a new alcohol swab and wipes down the new spot. While it dries, he opens the new package and prepares the applicator. He sticks it to the spot you requested then locks eyes with you again. “You want to push the button or me?”
Your nose tingles and tears well in your eyes. No one has ever helped you manage your diabetes before him and he is so caring and considerate, it's overwhelming some days. “You, please.” You sniffle.
“Okay, one, two,” he pushes the button at the same time he says, “three.”
You run your finger around the transmitter out of habit, ensuring the adhesive is fully stuck.
He pulls out a patch to place over it and shows you his choice. “Thought you'd appreciate the spooky season option,” he teases. The patch has adorable ghosts and pumpkins on it.
“Thank you for helping.”
He smiles and leans in to kiss you gently. “You never have to thank me for that. Let's check a finger stick one more time and then you can get some more rest.” You offer him a new finger to poke and he quickly gets a reading. “Up to 65. Let's do two more tabs then you can sleep.”
You take the offered glucose tabs and wait for them to dissolve. “I should probably just get up.”
He shakes his head. “No, you need to rest.” He stands and quickly changes out of the uniform and into comfy clothes then settles in beside you. “Come here,” he opens his arm for you to snuggle into him. “You sleep and I will wake you if you get out of range again.”
You sigh. “Fine. Love you.” You burrow your face into his shoulder and start to drift off almost instantly.
He pressed one more kiss to your forehead. “Love you, too, sweetheart.”
Hey there. I love your Spencer Reid stories and was hoping I could request something.
Just something fluffy about day to day life with Spencer and a Diabetic female reader. I imagine he does lots of research, keeps snacks and juices in his desk at work ,for her lows. How does he react when her low sugar alarms go off at night? When she's so sorry for waking him, when he already gets to bed early in the mornings and only gets a few hours to sleep. Does he first mistake her insulin for "something else", and freaks out thinking she's a user?( I Had a boyfriend think that once).
I know this is a lot of an ask and it's okay if you don't write it. But I can't find any Diabetic reader fics anywhere and it'd be super cool if you could do one.
You can message me if you need info on life with diabetes.
𝐋𝐨𝐰 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 ♡
Thank you for the request, hun. I tried to do my best to do as much research as I could, so I hope this is okay. But if I have gotten something wrong, please feel free to let me know <3

summary: Spencer takes care of you when you wake in the middle of the night to the sound of your glucose monitor.
word count: 2.0k
tags: Fluff. Comfort. Diabetic reader. Eating. Brief mentioning of reader being scared of feeling like a burden.
You toss and turn in bed, the familiar feeling of dizziness creeping in as you start to come to. The soft beeping of your glucose monitor cuts through the quiet of the night, its persistent alarm pulling you from the depths of your dreams. You blink rapidly, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep, but your heart sinks as you realize what the sound means.
Low blood sugar.
Sitting up slowly, you take a moment to gather your senses and find your bearings. You glance over to see Spencer’s silhouette beside you. He always looks so peaceful when he sleeps, wavy locks of brown hair softly tousled against the pillow, his lips slightly parted in a way that makes your heart ache with affection, but he begins to stir next to you. Guilt floods your chest for waking him, knowing he sacrifices so much of his sleep already for his work with the BAU, often staying up late thinking about cases or preparing for the next day’s challenges or having to pull all-nighters when cases demand it.
You fumble for the monitor, desperate to silence the alarm before it disturbs the tranquility of the night any further, but it’s too late. Spencer stirs more, his brow furrowing as he blinks awake, his eyes adjusting to the low light with a hint of confusion.
He murmurs your name, his voice thick with sleep, his voice laced with a groggy confusion and concern.
“I’m so sorry,” you rush out, your voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t mean to wake you. I just—”
“Don’t apologize,” he interrupts gently, propping himself up on one elbow. His concern is palpable as he studies your face, and you can see the worry etched in the lines of his features. “How low is it?”
You glance at the screen of the monitor and wince, your heart sinking further at the number displayed. “I’m at 60. I just need a snack.”
His eyes widen slightly, and without another word, he swings his legs over the side of the bed and stands. You can’t help but admire the way he moves, even in his sleepy state. “Stay here,” he says, his voice firm yet soft, a request that you can’t help but obey, though you do feel a slight sense of guilt for waking him up and now getting him out of bed. “I’ll get you something.”
You watch as he leaves the bedroom and pads down the hallway, the sound of his bare feet against the hardwood floor grounding you in the moment. As he disappears from view, you pull your knees to your chest, feeling an overwhelming mix of embarrassment and gratitude. You know he needs his sleep—he’s been working so hard lately—but the way he cares for you, despite the toll it takes on him, makes your heart swell with a warmth you can’t quite describe.
A moment later, he returns with a glass of juice and a granola bar, a sleepy smile lighting up his face that makes your already fast beating heart flutter. “Here you go, ” he says, holding out the glass of juice for you, his eyes sparkling with affection.
“Spencer, you didn’t have to—”
“Yes, I did. Please stop saying that,” he interrupts again, his voice a soft plea which instantly makes you feel lighter. “And I want to, so don’t worry about it.”
You take the glass from him, your fingers brushing against his as you do, sending a small thrill through you. “Still… I’m really sorry for waking you up,” you say softly, your voice filled with sincerity. “You work so hard, and you need your rest.”
He shakes his head, his expression turning serious as he leans in closer. “You’re my priority. I’d rather be awake helping you than asleep worrying about you.”
You sip the juice, feeling the sweetness flood your system like a warm embrace, and you can’t help but smile at him, the corners of your mouth lifting despite the earlier panic. “You really are the best.”
“Just doing my job,” he replies, but the warmth in his eyes tells you how much he means it, how deeply he cares.
As you finish your juice he takes the glass from you to set it on his bedside side table before he sits himself down beside you on the bed, propping his pillow against the headboard and leaning back, his eyes still fixed on you with an unwavering concern. He reaches out, prompting you to come closer, his hand open and inviting.
You move closer, shifting to sit beside him, leaning against his side as he drapes his arm around you, letting you rest your head on his shoulder. His presence is a comforting weight against your side, his fingers lingering against your skin, sending a soft shiver down your spine. “How are you feeling now?” he asks, his voice low and soothing.
“Better,” you admit, the dizziness fading as the fruit sugar kicks in, your body slowly returning to normal. “Thank you for being so amazing.”
He chuckles softly, his eyes sparkling with affection that makes your heart flutter. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”
He pulls you closer against his side, and you nestle against him, feeling the comforting warmth of his body seep into your bones. You can’t help but close your eyes, letting the safety of his presence wash over you like a soothing balm, the gentle rhythm of his breathing lulling you further into relaxation as you wait for your blood sugar to go back to normal.
“You can go back to sleep, if you want. You must be exhausted,” you say, though you don’t move away from his side. The warmth of his body feels too good, too safe, to leave even for a moment.
“I’m alright,” he replies, his voice a soft murmur, brushing against your ear like a gentle caress as he adjusts his hold on you, pulling you even closer. “I’d rather be here with you than trying to fall back asleep and worrying about you,” he murmurs, pressing a soft kiss to the top of your head, his lips lingering there for a moment that feels infinite.
You smile to yourself, feeling cherished and safe in his embrace. “You really don’t have to.”
“I want to,” he insists, his voice steady and calm, unwavering in its sincerity. “I’ll always want to.”
The sincerity in his words wraps around you, warming you up from the inside. You breathe in the soothing scent of his skin, a mix of his shampoo and something uniquely him, and it brings you a sense of all encompassing peace you didn’t realize you needed. You let his words linger in the air around you for a moment before you break the silence, letting his sentiment absorb within you.
“Spencer,” you finally whisper, the weight of the night’s events still lingering in your mind, “promise me that if I ever wake you up like this in the future, and it does bother you, you’ll tell me,” you say, a hint of vulnerability in your tone. “I don’t want to feel guilty for needing you.”
He shifts slightly, tilting your chin up with his finger so you can meet his gaze. The warmth and sincerity in his eyes make your heart flutter again, pushing the remnants of guilt away.
“I can’t promise that I won’t be a little groggy,” he says, his voice low and steady. “But I can promise you will never bother me for needing help. That’s what I’m here for.”
You nod slowly, feeling the tension in your chest ease just a bit. “I appreciate that,” you reply, your voice barely above a whisper. “It’s just… I would hate to be a burden. ”
“But you’re not,” he says firmly, his eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that makes you feel seen. “You’re not a burden. You’re my partner, and that means I’ll always be here for you, no matter the hour. It’s just part of loving someone.”
You let out a soft sigh, both relieved and grateful. “You make it sound so easy.”
He chuckles softly, the sound vibrating through you. “But it is easy. I love you.” He says it so matter of factly that it sends a rush of warmth through your chest. The simplicity of his declaration feels monumental than than any grand gesture could ever be.
You feel your cheeks warm at his words, the moment between you and Spencer vibrates through you, it feels all consuming in a way that leaves you momentarily breathless. “I love you too,” you reply, your voice a little shaky as you nuzzle your face into his shoulder, closing your eyes as you let yourself fully sink into the moment and let the weight of the world outside fade away for a bit.
Minutes pass in peaceful silence, the only sound being the soft hum of the night and the quiet rhythm of your breathing. You can feel Spencer’s heart beating steadily beside you, a calm and reassuring presence. You drift into a peaceful state of half slumber, your mind finding a place of ease. Every now and then, you feel Spencer’s fingers gently tracing small patterns on your arm, grounding you in the moment until his voice finally breaks through the silence.
“I think it’s time to check your blood sugar again,” he says softly, his tone gentle but filled with care. “Make sure you’re back to normal.”
You nod slightly, still nestled against him, reluctant to break the comfort of the moment. “Yeah” you murmur, your voice thick with sleepiness.
Spencer shifts away just enough to reach for your monitor. As he checks the reading, you watch him, noting the way his brow furrows in concentration, an expression you’ve come to recognize as his deep-seated need to ensure your well-being.
He glances back at you, a slight smile breaking through the concern. “You’re at 85. Just a little lower than your target, but still good.” He takes the granola bar from the bedside table and hands it to you, his eyes still filled with warmth and encouragement. “Finish this, and I’ll feel a lot better.”
You take the granola bar, feeling a swell of appreciation for his attentiveness. “Thank you,” you say, your voice soft as you unwrap it and take a small bite. The chewy texture and nutty flavor is comforting on your tongue. As you chew, you watch him, unable to suppress the smile that spreads across your face. He’s still watching you, his gaze a mix of concern and affection, and it makes your heart race. “What?” you ask playfully, raising an eyebrow at him.
“Just admiring you,” he replies, a shy smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “You’re really beautiful.”
You roll your eyes but can’t help the blush that creeps up your cheeks. “Spencer, it’s 3 AM, and I just woke you up because of a blood sugar emergency. I don’t think ‘beautiful’ is the first word that comes to mind.”
He just shrugs his shoulders, a sweet, almost shy smile playing on his lips. “For me it is,” he insists, his voice steady, and the earnestness in his eyes makes you melt a little inside.
You finish the granola bar, feeling a little more energized. “You really are the sweetest.”
Spencer just shrugs again, holding out his hand so you can hand over the now empty granola bar wrapper to discharge it next to the empty juice glass. As the two of you lay back down on the mattress, Spencer instinctively wraps his arm around you once more, pulling you close. The warmth of his body envelops you, and you can’t help but let out a contented sigh.
“Are you feeling better?” he asks, his voice still a soft murmur, the concern never quite leaving his tone.
“Yeah,” you reply, a smile spreading across your face.
“Good,” he says, his eyes sparkling with relief.
You nod, feeling the weight of the night sink in, wrapping around your heart like a warm blanket, leaving only the two of you in your little bubble of comfort.
As your eyes flutter closed once more, Spencer kisses the top of your head gently, his lips lingering there for a moment. “Get some sleep,” he whispers, his voice a soothing balm that sends you drifting back toward dreamland. With a final squeeze of his hand, you nestle deeper into his embrace, feeling cherished and safe as you slip back into slumber.
Okay soooo I’m probably casting out a very small net with this one, but that’s okay lmao. Write what you want to see, right? N E Wayz…(try to guess who my mains are LMAO)

Caleb🍎
He’s grown up with you, so he’s seen you at your lowest lows and your highest highs (pun intended). He’s got your favorite meals and their carbs memorized, and he tracks your glucose closer than you do. Before you can go low, he’s texting you to eat or drink something. If you’re high, he texts you to bolus X amount (because of course he’s got a bolus calculator). He learns how to make your favorite meals carb-friendly and knows all your favorite snacks and has some on hand. If you use an insulin pump, he goes with you to your training session and takes thorough notes, asking questions, and making sure he’s taking everything in. If you take multiple daily injections, he always makes sure you have enough needles and enough insulin (both long-acting and fast-acting). On days when it’s hard to get out of bed, he’s there, and when your sugars drop at night, he’ll wake you up before your monitors do with something to bring you up. No matter what, he lightens your load as much as he can 🧡
Rafayel 🐚
It freaks him out at first, especially when your sugar drops in front of him, and you get lightheaded and confused. You had to sit down and put your head between your knees while you sipped on juice, and he was pacing around you the entire time, panicking about what everything meant. Afterwards, he vowed never to be caught off guard again and learned everything he could about Type 1 Diabetes. Rafayel checked out books, took online courses, and read through forums, and the next time your sugar dropped around him, he was on it. He bought backup sensors, insulin, and anything else you may need to keep at his house (don’t ask how he got prescriptions). His fridge is stocked with both fast-acting and long-acting insulin if you need it, and there’s two fridge drawers worth of your favorite juices and snacks. He’ll paint and draw little designs around your CGMs (Constant Glucose Monitor), and if you wear an Omnipod, he’ll doodle something on that, too. If you mention liking the colorful, patterned stickers (that can get pricey), he’ll collaborate with a brand to make you a custom line to decorate with. If he ever draws or paints you, he makes you feel seen. He’ll draw you with your CGM and pump if you wear one, and you always feel so seen and loved by him. 💜
Sylus 🐦⬛
Sylus hits the ground running when it comes to your diabetes. Afraid you won’t be able to afford insulin? He’s got it. Got a faulty sensor and don’t have any extras? He’s got an entire store room with your brand of choice. Your pump stops working and is being a bitch? He’s got a new pump ready for you and knows exactly how it works (and has already programmed it for you). In fact, because of his wealth and power, he has his thumb on the pulse of any medical advancements and devices that may help. Outside of devices and medicine, Sylus keeps an eye on your sugars through your sensor and Mephie. If you’re out and about and you go high, you may happen to hear a crow cawing loudly nearby. If your sugar drops in the middle of the night, you’ll be woken up by Sylus calling you or by Mephie pecking at your head. He holds you when it all gets to be too much, and comforts you when you get sore in your usual injection spots. If you need a recovery day, he’s on top of it. Making sure you’ve got everything you need and that you’re comfortable and safe (and that your job approves your time off). ❤️
Xavier ⭐
Xavier has known about your diabetes since you became his coworker (he sneaked a peek at your files), but lets you come to him on your own about your illness. He’s always so curious about your condition and makes sure to keep an eye on you and how you’re feeling. His questions never feel invasive, but genuinely curious about how it works and what he can do to help. He keeps insulin in his fridge for whenever you come over to his apartment, and if you eat together, he’ll wait until your insulin has taken effect to eat with you. When you go out to eat, he’ll look up the menu and carb amounts before you get there and offer to split it with you if it’s very carb-dense. He always makes sure to keep something on hand for you if your sugar drops, especially when you’re out on missions. He likes knowing how your devices work, and will sit with you and talk to you while you inject if you don’t want to be alone. He can’t help but speak up if people around him say something negative about diabetes, it doesn’t matter the type. He’s proud of you and how hard you work to keep your body running. 💚
Zayne ❄️
Oml. Zayne is both the best and the worst Li for diabetics LMAO
He’s super good about making sure you don’t go low (obviously), but your sugars always seem to creep a little higher when you’re around him. Even so, he’ll go out of his way to either get you sugar-free options (that actually taste good) or calculate how much of a sweet you can have and stay at a good level. He goes with you to all of your endocrinology appointments and will speak up for you, and he’ll go with you to get bloodwork done as well. Since he’s in the medical field, he’s always getting medical journals about your condition and will text you snippets of journals and articles with tips and new advancements in medicine. He’s learned how to make your favorite sweets and treats as healthy and safe as possible for you to eat with him, and will often swap out some of his favorites with yours, just to enjoy them with you. He’s great about keeping up with your sugars and medical devices, and will help you inject if you get tired or overwhelmed. He’s constantly reminding you to wipe down your injection/infusion sites with alcohol first because he knows you’ll forget to (guilty…lmao). He’ll also educate people when they’re ignorant about diabetes and the different types. 🩵

bsf!Han - bursts into your bathroom and finds you injecting your insulin
Jisung was over at your apartment for a sleepover, like you’d had many times before. You’d already had dinner and finished the movie you’d downloaded for the evening, and now you were both getting ready for bed.
Jisung was changing in your bedroom while you were in the bathroom, getting ready to do your nighttime insulin injection. He didn’t know you were a diabetic, as you kept this one thing about you private from almost everyone. It was a lot to deal with sometimes, but you didn’t like to burden others with your problems, especially Jisung who was so sensitive. He had enough to deal with without worrying about your chronic illness.
You had just cleaned your stomach with an alcohol wipe and were gently inserting the needle into your skin when your bathroom door suddenly burst open.
“Hey, do you have an extra toothbr— OH MY GOD ARE YOU DOING DRUGS?!” Jisung yelled, frozen in the doorway of your bathroom, eyes wide as saucers as he saw you injecting yourself with insulin.
“Goddammit Ji, could you fucking knock?” You huffed, hitting the button on the end of the pen and injecting the medicine, mentally counting to ten.
“SO I WONT CATCH YOU SHOOTING UP AGAIN?! What the fuck Noona?” His mouth was hanging open as he stared at your stomach.
“I’m not doing drugs you idiot.” You sighed, removing the needle and letting your pajama shirt drop back down. “This is fucking insulin.”
“Wh—“ He stopped as he processed this, watching you remove the needle from the pen and recap it, cleaning up your supplies. “Oh.”
“Here’s your toothbrush.” You tugged a drawer open by the sink and pulled out a fresh toothbrush, handing it to him before brushing past him and shutting him in the bathroom.
You trudged over to your bed, pulling back the covers and flopping down into the sheets with a sigh. Fuck. Damn Jisung and his comfortability with you. Of course he’d burst into the bathroom for the 30 seconds you’d had your needles out. Now you were gonna have to tell him about your diabetes.
You heard the sink shut off in the bathroom and then the door quietly opened, but you didn’t turn to look at him. He padded across the floor to the other side of your bed, slipping in like he normally would for your sleepovers. But instead of attaching himself to you like a koala, he stayed on his side, giving you space.
“Noona?” He called for you tentatively.
“What.” You grumbled, still upset at the situation.
“I’m sorry.” He sounded so tiny and fragile that you were worried he was gonna start crying. When you finally turned over he was watching you with a trembling lip and glassy eyes.
“Oh Ji…”
“Are you sick?” He asked, voice cracking at the end. He was about to burst into tears, you could tell. This was exactly why you’d never wanted to tell him.
“Honey, no, not like that.” You opened your arms to him and he immediately burrowed into you, tucking his head into your neck and wrapping his limbs around your body in a tight squeeze. “I have diabetes.”
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?” He asked, voice a little calmer but still upset. You stroked his back to calm him.
“Because I didn’t want you to freak out or get upset.” You explained softly. You knew if you kept your voice calm it would smooth him. “I’m not sick or dying. I just have a disease that I need to manage.”
“But it must be so hard.” He ran a hand soothingly up your side. “I’ve heard it can be a difficult condition to manage, especially if you never talk to anyone about it.”
“Well…” You trailed off. You didn’t want to lie to him anymore, but you weren’t sure if telling the truth would upset him more. Only one way to find out. “It is really hard sometimes. I’m often worried about my diet and keeping up with my medications. It can be overwhelming.”
“I wish you would’ve told me Noona.” He mumbled into your neck. “I’m your best friend. I’m supposed to be someone you rely on when you’re stressed out.”
“I do rely on you Ji.” You reassured him. “Just spending time with you helps me.”
“I mean, more than that.”His voice softened. “I’m always coming to you with my problems, and I want you to be able to do the same.”
You sighed, taking a moment to bask in the warmth and comfort of him hugging you tightly. He was right of course. You shouldn’t hide such a big part of your life from him anymore. He may be sensitive, but he was also mature enough to handle adult problems. And that included your condition.
“Are you sure you want to hear about it?” You asked him.
He lifted his head finally, hope in his eyes as he nodded. “Yes, if you’d like to tell me.”
“Okay.” You smiled softly, and when he leaned down and kissed your cheek, you flushed.
“Hold on, let me get settled.” Jisung made you giggle as he adjusted his position a bit, fixing his legs and getting his head just right before squeezing you even tighter. “Mmkay, vent away Noona.”
You spent the rest of the night sharing your health journey with him as he listened intently and asked questions, making sure to comfort you and reassure you whenever you spoke about anything particularly difficult or stressful. It was one of your favorite moments you’d shared with him, and afterwards your bond was stronger then ever. You never regretted confiding in him about your condition.

bf!Felix - bakes you a whole tray of brownies
You and Felix had been seeing each other for a little while now, hanging out and going on dates, but you’d yet to put a label on things.
He was coming over today to hang out, and he’d told you he had a surprise. You were a bit nervous about what this meant, but you were excited to see him nonetheless.
You’d just come out of your room when you heard a knock on your apartment door. You bounced over to it, checking the peep hole and seeing a beaming blonde Lix on the other side. You threw the door open.
“Surprise!” He yelled, holding out a bouquet of roses and a plain dessert box. Taped on the lid there was a note. “Read the card!”
“Don’t you wanna come inside first?” You chuckled as you took the box and bouquet from him, stepping back so he could enter the apartment.
Felix was practically vibrating as he shut the door behind himself and followed you to the kitchen where you set down the box and flowers.
“Open the carrrrrrrd~” Felix whined when you started opening the cabinets, looking for a vase.
You raised an eyebrow at him but stopped what you were doing and came back to the box. “So needy today…” You teased.
“Noonaaaaaaaa.” He batted his eyes at you and you giggled reaching for the card on the box. You pulled it off as Felix inched closer to you, biting his lip.
You opened the card and saw the single question written in his messy script. ‘Will you be my girlfriend?’ You broke out into a wide smile. “Felix….”
“So?” He asked coming up behind you and pulling you into a back hug. “What do you say?”
“Hmm…” You pretended to think about it, but turned in his arms to wrap your yourself around him. “I say yes.”
“Yay!” Felix’s face lit up so bright you thought you needed sunglasses. Then he kissed you, knocking you away with his enthusiasm. When he pulled away you were both a little breathless. “Now open the box.”
You pulled out of his embrace to open the dessert box on the counter. But once the lid was open and you saw what he’d brought, your smile faltered. “Oh! Brownies…”
“Yeah, I made them myself.” He was still excited, not noticing your demeanor change. “And we’re gonna eat the whole box to celebrate!”
Felix grabbed the box and skipped out of the kitchen to the living room to pick out a movie, but you didn’t follow. You stared at the bouquet on the counter for a moment, trying to figure out what you were going to do.
You were a diabetic. You couldn’t eat half a box of brownies and be okay. You could have maybe one, if they weren’t too big. But Felix didn’t know this. Your relationship was brand new, and you hadn’t brought it up before now. You were hoping to keep this particular thing about yourself private for a while longer. Maybe you could just eat one brownie and he wouldn’t notice anything was wrong.
You put the roses in a vase and poured two glasses of milk before going to join Felix in the living room. He’d put on Beauty and the Beast. “I brought you some milk.”
“Thanks babe.” Felix smiled up at you as you handed him his glass, sitting down next to him on the couch. He sipped his milk while you pulled the box of brownies towards you. Damn. They were big. You could probably get away with eating half of one…
Felix ate two brownies and drank all his milk while you took your time eating half of one. They tasted fantastic, especially since you weren’t used to eating desserts like this. But you made yourself stop after half of one, pushing it aside and leaning back into the couch next to Felix.
He continued to watch the movie, not noticing you’d only eaten a little, until he reached for a third and saw your half eaten piece. “Noona, you didn’t finish your brownie.”
“Yeah, uh, I’m just gonna eat half I think.” You said it casually, not looking away from the movie.
“What’s wrong? Did you not like them?” His eyes widened slightly, looking a little upset.
“No no, it was great!” You reassured him, but you could tell he needed more of an explanation. “It’s just…I’m trying to diet.”
Now he really frowned. “(Y/n), who told you that you needed to diet? That’s ridiculous. You’re gorgeous, you don’t need to change anything about yourself. I like you just the way you are.”
Goddamn him, he was perfect. Of course his response would be that you didn’t need to go on a diet. Now what? Felix reached for your hands and squeezed them, giving you an encouraging smile.
You sighed. “Well, I actually do have to diet. I can’t eat a lot of sugar because…um, I’m a diabetic.”
“What?” Felix’s face changed to surprise. “Really? Why didn’t you say anything before…?”
“I was going to tell you eventually, but…” You shrugged. “I don’t really advertise the fact that I have a health condition and a restrictive diet. It’s not a ‘sexy’ thing to talk about with someone you like.”
“(Y/n)…I’m sorry if I made you feel like you couldn’t share that part of yourself with me.” He squeezed your hands as he apologized. “And I’m sorry about the brownies, I wouldn’t have brought them if I’d known.”
“Lixie, don’t apologize. It’s not your fault at all. I should’ve just told you.” You squeezed his hands back. “And while I try to avoid sweets, I can still have things in moderation.”
“Okay.” He nodded, pulling you into his arms then and leaning you both back into the couch. “Well I’ll keep that in mind for the future.”
“Thank you for baking for me.” You nuzzled into his side as he held you. “It was really sweet.”
“Well I had to have something to give to my sweet and sexy girlfriend.” He emphasize the ‘sexy’, picking up on your earlier comment, and obviously trying to reassure you. Between that and his strong arms, it was working.
“Mmmm, I could get used to this.” You tilted your head up and puckered your lips and Felix leaned down to kiss you softly.
“Hey, I bet I can look up some sugar free recipes to try for you, hmm?”
“That would be great, Lixie. Thank you for understanding.”
“Of course babe. That’s what boyfriends are for.”
You both settled into the couch as your attention went back to the movie, content in each others embrace.

sub!Seungmin - you get the wrong drink and can’t have it
You were seated across from Seungmin at a very busy restaurant and the waitress had just taken your order after waiting for twenty minutes.
“My god, I’m starving.” Seungmin sighed, leaning back in his chair and shutting his eyes.
“I know,” You agreed, just as hungry as him. “We really worked up our appetites earlier.”
Seungmin cracked an eye open at you, one eyebrow raised. “Yeah, were you trying to commit homicide by orgasm denial? What the fuck, Noona.”
“But you took it so well.” You chuckled, taking in his flushed neck and red ears. Seungmin’s reward for being so good during your earlier session was that you were treating him to his favorite restaurant.
Your relationship with Seungmin was a bit complicated to outsiders, but the two of you worked perfectly. ‘Dating’ wasn’t really the right term for what you were doing. You were his dominant and he your submissive, but only in the privacy of his apartment. You met up for sessions when it fit your schedules, and sometimes you hung out like this afterwards, but just as normal people. You never treated him like a Sub in public. In fact Seungmin was much more teasing than you in his everyday normal life.
You both chatted casually as you waited for your food and drinks for almost half an hour. When the food finally arrived, Seungmin dug in immediately, shoveling it in. “Finally.”
You took your first bite then reached for your soda, thirsty, and took a long swig. You frowned. This wasn’t a diet soda…it couldn’t be. It tasted way too good. You looked over at Seungmin. “Hey, can you taste this? I don’t think it’s diet.”
You passed Seungmin your glass and he took a swing, shaking his head. “No yeah, that’s definitely regular soda.”
“Damn.” You sighed. You couldn’t drink this. You were a diabetic and had to be really careful with sugar, so you never drank regular sodas. But Seungmin didn’t know this. You two didn’t talk about deep life things very often, and you never thought to bring it up before. It seemed irrelevant to your ‘relationship’.
“Just drink the regular one Noona. She’s never coming back to the table, this place is packed and she’s working our whole section.” Seungmin shrugged it off, his statement probably right. But you couldn’t drink it.
“What did you get?” You asked him, eyeing his cup.
“Regular soda.” He said around a mouthful of food. You sighed.
“I’ll wait for her.” You insisted, looking around the room. You watched for your waitress while Seungmin ate, more slowly now, keeping an eye on you.But your server was flitting around so fast you couldn’t get her attention. After ten minutes of waiting you still had no luck.
Seungmin sighed in frustration. “Noona you’re being ridiculous. Why can’t you just drink the regular soda?”
You sighed, finally looking at him. “Because I can’t. Like, uh, medically.”
“What do you mean?” Now he looked confused.
“I can’t drink sugary drinks Min. I’m a diabetic.” You explained, waiting for him to react.
“Oh. Why didn’t you just say that?” He got up from his seat, grabbed your cup, and then walked across the room towards the kitchen where the waitress had disappeared.
You watched in shock as he walked straight into the kitchen without hesitation. You stared after him with an open mouth. Had he really just walked into the restaurant kitchen with your drink? You sat there frozen until he reappeared a few minutes later with a new cup.
Seungmin walked back over to your table, set the drink down, and then took his seat like nothing had happened. “Here you go. Diet soda.”
“Did you just—” You broke off, blinking at him. “You walked right into the kitchen?”
“Yeah, they were taking too long to come over to us. I went and got your drink.”
“What did you say to get them to get you anew drink?!”
“I dunno, I showed them the cup, told them my girlfriend was a diabetic and they’d given you a regular coke, and I needed a diet drink instead. The guy by the machine handed me a new glas.”
You stared at him as he took another bite, unbothered. That was…really sweet of him? Seungmin had never showed you this kind of affection before, not to mention gone out of his way to take care of you in public. He usually treated you like you were mildly annoying him. And what had he called you just now?
“Girlfriend huh?”
He didn’t look up at you, but you saw his neck and ears start to flush again. He tried to play it off. “Yeah? What, was that wrong?”
“I mean honestly…” You bit your lip before taking a sip of your new drink.Ah yes, diet soda. “I didn’t think you really liked me that much.”
Seungmin finally looked at you, dropping his ‘cool’ facade. “…Is that why you never told me you were diabetic?”
You swallowed. He seemed actually…upset. “I mean, I wasn’t purposefully keeping it from you. But we don’t really talk about things…like that. I’m honestly shocked to hear you refer to me as your girlfriend.”
Seungmin sat up, shocking you when he reached across the table and took your hand. “I’m sorry Noona. I’m not so good at expressing myself when it really matters. But…I really do like you. A lot. And not just when you’re, um, in my bedroom.”
“Well, I like you too.”You smiled as he squeezed your hand. This was obviously hard for him to say, but you could tell he was being sincere. “And I’ll be your girlfriend, if you want.”
“Yes please.” Seungmin finally lit up, nodding enthusiastically. “And we can talk about serious stuff too. I mean, I want to know about your life outside of our, um, relationship.”
“You want to know about my condition?” You asked him, surprised, but he nodded. “Okay. As long as you promise to be nice about it.”
“Of course Noona, I would never tease you about that.” He promised, serious. You nodded, believing him.
The rest of the meal was spent with you both in deep conversation about your health, and Seungmin made sure to hold your hand across the table the whole time.

bf!I.N - Your blood sugar drops on a shopping trip
Jeongin surprised you this afternoon for your one month anniversary by picking you up and declaring he was taking you on a shopping spree. The trip was so spontaneous in fact, that you hadn’t had lunch before he’d showed up at your door with his credit card burning a hole in his wallet.
The mall was crowded, but that didn’t stop Jeongin from taking you everywhere you wanted to go. The afternoon flew by as you both had fun together, going from shop to shop, you browsing more than anything. Jeongin ended up finding way more things than you that he liked, and had twice as many bags. You knew when you met him that he liked fashion, but this was the first time you’d sen him in action. He was so locked in, he hadn’t even realized it was getting close to dinner time. And you were already way past needing to eat something.
“Baby, I’m getting pretty hungry.” You mentioned to him as he stopped outside of the next store, a luxury jewelry brand. “Let’s go eat.”
“Aw, but Noona, I wanted to get you something!” He pouted, tugging on your sleeve as you paused in the storefront. “Don’t you want to pick out some jewelry for our anniversary?”
He batted his bright eyes at you, bottom lip sticking out a bit. Jeongin may have been taller than you, but you were still older, and he always whipped out his boba eyes when he wanted something. You caved immediately. “Okay…but dinner after this store, alright?”
“Okay!” His face lit up as he grabbed your hand and scurried into the store, his soft hair bouncing as he went. God he was so fucking cute. He pulled you up to a display case filled with all kinds of extremely fancy and expensive luxury jewelry. “What do you want? A necklace? Or they have really pretty bracelets too. Maybe some earrings…?”
Jeongin quickly got lost in his search for the perfect item for you, but you were distracted. You could feel your blood sugar dropping, and you were worried it was going to crash before you could get to the food court for dinner.
Jeongin didn’t know you were a diabetic. You’d officially been together for a month, but so far your time together had been kept light and playful, both of you simply happy and basking in the love of a new relationship. You hadn’t wanted to bring down the mood by telling him about your chronic illness. While it was a manageable disease, it was also serious and you had to maintain your lifestyle pretty rigorously, with medications and diet. It wasn’t a casual subject, nor one that you liked to bring up if you could help it. And you really didn’t want to bring down the mood of your new relationship with your precious and adorable boyfriend.
Jeongin was perfect, he didn’t have any serious health issues, and you didn’t know if he would understand your issues or think of you differently after knowing. You were older then him, you had more life experiences that he might not understand, and you didn’t want to make him uncomfortable in any way about your age gap or overwhelm him by dumping your issues on him so soon into the relationship.
“Noona? Which one do you like?” Jeongin’s voice brought you back to reality. He’d had the store employee pull out some options for you to try on, but you weren’t listening, distracted by your thoughts and the growing feeling of dizziness you were experiencing. “Or, if you don’t like any of these…we could look at some couple rings?”
“I’m sorry, I can’t do this right now.” You weren’t registering his words, only hearing a low ringing in your ears as you turned to stumble towards the store entrance.
“Wh—(Y/n)?” Jeongin called after you, but you kept going until you were out of the store.
You looked around quickly, trying to find a place you could sit down. Your shopping bags were getting heavier by the minute and you needed to relax and focus. You spotted a low bench close by, and as you trudged over to it, you felt your feet and hands start to tingle, signaling you were about to crash.
You were laser focused, dropping your shopping bags and plopping onto the bench. You needed to open your purse, you had some emergency juice in there. As you were trying to pull if off of your shoulder, an upset Jeongin approached you, already rambling.
“…don’t have to get couple rings if you don’t want, I should’t have suggested that, I know our relationship is still very new—” He broke off as soon as he saw how pale you looked, and your hands shaking as you tried to grip the zipper of your purse. “Woah, (Y/n), what’s going on?”
“Help,” You breathe out, looking up at him with glazed eyes, unable to open your bag.
“Okay.” He quickly sat next to you, reaching for your purse and opening it in one fluid motion. “What do you need?”
His face was pinched with worry as your hands continued to shake, but you didn’t have the mental awareness to comfort him right now.
“S-should be a juice b-box in there.” You mumbled, and he immediately started to rummage around. “In the pocket.”
“Uhhh…” He sounded stressed but found it quickly, pulling it out and pushing your purse aside. “Okay hold on.” He pulled the straw off the side, pushing it into the top of the box before handing it to you. “Here you go.” But your hands were shaking too much to grip the juice box and you started to panic, so Jeongin held it up for you instead. “It’s alright, I got it.”
Then it was quiet, you swallowing down the juice and him watching with concern and worry. You held his hands and wrist over the juice box, finding comfort in his touch as you felt the sugar hitting your veins and starting to take affect. After a few moments you sucked the last of the liquid out and finally dropped your hands, taking a deep breath.
Jeongin sat there quietly as you breathed, setting the empty juice box aside and reaching for your hands, holding them in his own. You stared at his hands, so delicate and pretty, yet strong. He made you feel so safe, cared for.
You let out a deep sigh, leaning your head on his shoulder as you started to feel better. “Wooo, okay. I feel better now.”
But Jeongin was the opposite of relieved. “(Y/n), what just happened? Why did you almost collapse like that? Your face was…and your hands…?”
You lifted your head slowly and he turned to look at you, his eyes wet. You felt awful. “Jeongin, I never meant for you to find out this way but…I have diabetes. And my blood sugar dropped because I hadn’t eaten anything in a while.”
“Noona…why didn’t you tell me? I never would have pushed you to keep shopping if I’d known! I’m so sorry—”
“Hey, no, this isn’t your fault. I should have told you sooner, I just…” You trailed off, looking into his wide eyes, full of worry and regret. This was your fault, you’d made him feel this way by keeping this to yourself. You dropped your head. “I’m so sorry you had to see that. I never wanted to burden you with my illness like this…”
“(Y/n)…” He reached for your chin, lifting your head so your eyes met. “Your health condition is not a burden. You’re my girlfriend, you can share anything with me, not just the good things. I want to know about the hard things too.”
“I didn’t want to burst our happy bubble by bringing up my hardships…but I guess I have now. You’re so young and bright and perfect. I don’t want to weigh you down with my ‘adult’ problems.”
“Noona, you might be older than me, but don’t forget I’m an adult too. I may not have experienced the same problems as you, but I’m nowhere near perfect. I have things that I struggle with too.” He squeezed your chin gently, his thumb tracing over your cheek before dropping his hand again. “Promise me you won’t keep things to yourself to try and ‘spare me’?”
“But—” Jeongin put a finger to your lips before you could protest.
“I mean it, I want to know everything about you. Promise?”
You nodded and he dropped his hand again so you could answer. “I promise.”
His dimples appeared then as he smiled, leaning forward to kiss you softly, love radiating from him in waves. When he pulled away you were blushing. “Now how about we go get some food? And you can tell me all about your diabetes.”
“But what about our couple rings?” You asked, raising an eyebrow.
“You really want to get some?” His expression turned hopeful as you nodded, reaching for your hand again. “Okay. But we can come back after we eat.”
“Deal.” You agreed, letting Jeongin pull you to your feet and wrap you up in a tight squeeze. “And the rings can be a promise for us to share our all our experiences with each other, good and bad.”
Jeongin pulled back from the hug to cup your face in his soft hands, his smile full of adoration. “I couldn’t think of a better promise to make you.”

Comfort
True to the weather forecast that you watched on TV with Joel last night, the temperatures in Austin have shot up overnight. The sun has barely risen, only a few thin streaks of light falling through the blinds that cover the window of your bedroom. Which is Joel's bedroom, really. But during the summer, it has evolved into something that feels more like yours rather than his.
You blink groggily, feeling the mattress dip beside you as Joel reaches over to shut his alarm clock off, the beeping noise that woke you dying down the moment his hand touches the button. A small noise leaves your throat in protest, your left leg still tangled between his and Joel turns back to face you. “Not today, darlin’. I gotta start goin’.”
Some days, your pouting works, keeping him in bed for a few minutes longer. But he takes his jobs seriously and you don’t blame him for wanting the heavy lifting done before the temperatures peak around lunchtime.
Joel’s beard scratches against your skin as he leans over to press a kiss to your face before he begins to carefully disentangle himself from you. His arm slides out from below you, his embrace that you were so peacefully resting in until a moment ago gone. He makes sure not to brush over the dexcom that is currently attached to your upper left arm, the white device peeking out from below the sheets. You can see him pause at the sight, his gears already turning. “Why don’t you get up too? Think I’ve got enough time to have a coffee.”
“Fine,” you groan, only reluctantly agreeing to his peace offer. It's not as good as staying in bed with him but you can always take a nap later and enjoy his presence while you have it. You peel the sheets off your body, padding over to the bathroom while you listen to Joel pull on jeans and a shirt that already has so many holes in it you don't bother to count them anymore.
You’ve settled into a comfortable routine during the summer months, even with him leaving early and coming home late. With Sarah at football camp, you have the house all to yourself, a luxury you enjoy more than you’d like to admit. You’ve spent countless days lounging in the backyard or swimming a few laps around the pool, occasionally preparing a fancy dinner for Joel or making yourself useful in any other way. He drinks coffee by his kitchen window every morning, unless he’s running late. Today, you join him, hopping up onto the counter as the sun steadily rises and the first cars are started up outside, bringing people to work.
You remind him to give you a kiss every day, despite knowing that he’d never forget. No matter if you’re in the kitchen with him or still in bed or already nose-deep in a book. Without fail, Joel Miller finds you before he leaves.
“We’re finally getting that delivery today,” Joel hums, swirling the last sips of his coffee around in his mug. “If the load ‘s good, I could get off early.”
“That would be nice,” you agree softly, rubbing the last bit of sleep out of the corners of your eyes. “Think I’ll take a dip in the pool later.”
“Then I better be home to see that,” Joel teases as he turns his back to you, washing his mug out in the sink. Then, he leans over to kiss you again and it only makes you long for him more. You’re certain he feels the same.
“You check your levels?” He hums into your neck and oh, he’s gotten smart, asking when he knows you won’t push him away.
“All good,” you reassure him. Some days, you think he is more occupied with your condition than you are, fussing over you and reminding you to track your sugar and insulin constantly. It’s gotten annoying occasionally, but you know he only does it because he cares. And if you’re being honest with yourself, that is a big part of why he has become your favorite person rather quickly.
You watch as Joel grabs his tool belt and heads out the door, giving you one little last wave. Then, you listen to the truck start up outside and the sound of the engine that slowly fades away into the distance.
“Fine,” you mutter to yourself, jumping off the kitchen counter to reach for your phone. You prefer tracking with the dexcom sensor, the device making it so easy to check your levels at all times. Today, you’re in the clear. The number inside the small circle in the app reads 110.
The blue insulin pen is waiting for you beside the fridge, placed on a small wooden tray that conveniently showed up there the first time you slept over. It holds a few small juice boxes, glucose tablets and your trusted pen.
You stare at it for a few moments, weighing it in your hands as you calculate how much you’ll need for your breakfast. Then, with practiced ease, you poke yourself with the needle, allowing the chosen amount of liquid to flow into your body.
“Ten minute warning…” You hum, putting the pen back into its place and reaching for the kitchen shelf instead. You’ve gotten much better at timing your breakfast properly, making sure that the insulin doesn’t act too fast nor too slow.
Once you’re done eating, you check the number again. 160. All fine, just like you promised Joel. Good.
It’s still early but you don’t feel like going back to bed. Thursday means the farmer’s market is happening at the local community center and for once you may be early enough to have the first pick. The fresh fruits and vegetables have a tendency to bring mouth-watering recipe ideas for dinner to your mind so you lock the front door behind you and head out.
Indeed, the stands are not yet picked over and you take your time, enjoying the nice weather and chatting with a few familiar faces. The short trip turns into a few hours and it’s only when the heat starts to press down on you below the plastic tents that you make your way back. The groceries are unloaded rather quickly and you fetch your current read, a book about a spontaneous summer love in Italy, from upstairs.
It’s been exactly the kind of uneventful day you enjoy in the summer, the one that leaves you feeling warm and tanned and thankful for pools and cool drinks. The way it should be. You have no idea that this is about to change.
The deck at the back of the Miller’s house is shaded so that you don’t feel like you’ll immediately burn up in the sun. A soft groan of relief escapes you as you stretch out on the lounge chair, opening your book to where you left off. You read about cicadas and pine trees and steady waves rolling ashore and slowly but surely, your eyes begin to droop.
***
Something is wrong. The sun is much lower than it was a few minutes ago. The front door opens and closes. Joel can’t be back yet. It’s still lunchtime.
For a moment, you think you are just too sleepy, that you are still in some kind of dream. Then, you think you’ve spent too much time in the sun. It takes a few seconds for you to realize that the way you’re feeling, a bit hazy, a bit like you’re floating– it’s low sugar.
You blindly reach to your right, onto the wooden table beside you but your phone isn’t in reach. When you turn your head, you realize why. You never brought it outside. It’s still on the kitchen counter, where you left it after unloading the groceries.
Slowly, you stand, looking down to see that your legs are trembling slightly. You force them to take one step after another, coaxing your body in an attempt to stay upright. You can already hear the soft beeping noise from inside the house that alerts you to a number outside the safe range. You push past the screen door– but before you can reach the kitchen, and with it your phone, Joel reaches you.
His eyes are wide, the panic clear on his face as he holds your phone in his right hand, the alert on the display blinking in a steady rhythm, displaying a too low 63. “Did you eat?” He presses out, his free hand coming up to rest on your shoulder, steadying you. The worry in his voice is palpable and you shake your head at his question.
“Okay, okay–” The gears are turning in his head and you’re not sure if he’s talking to you or himself. “Okay. We need– Do you need me to get the emergency pen?”
“No,” you quickly decline. “No, it’s okay, it’s not that bad.”
You can see him weighing his options, his eyes raking over your face and your body for a moment, no doubt trying to assess your state. You know you’re shaking and that your face likely looks drained, a thin sheen of sweat covering it. His gaze turns to the kitchen next and you can see him fight with himself. Ultimately, Joel steps forward, wrapping an arm around you and leading you into the living room, his grasp not leaving you until you’re securely seated on the couch. “Can’t have you passing out now. Don’t try and stand, alright? Just … sit tight.”
He puts your phone down and rushes to the kitchen, leaving you alone with the low number on the display that almost seems to laugh at you. What were you thinking, dozing off like that?
Joel is back after mere seconds, holding up a juice box in one hand and the package of glucose tablets in the other, silently letting you choose. You point at the juice and he nods, kneeling in front of you and sticking the thin plastic straw into the pre-punched hole. “One apple juice, coming right up.” You can tell he’s trying to lighten the mood but you can’t bring yourself to give him more than a weak smile in return.
He nudges the box into your hands and then sits patiently as you begin to drink, one of his hands coming to rest on your thigh, his thumb drawing lazy circles into your skin. “15 – 15 rule, right?” Joel asks and at the look of surprise on your face, he adds; “15 grams of carbs, wait for 15 minutes. Then see if it helped?”
“Yeah,” you agree in between small sips. “Yeah, how do you know about 15 – 15?” You watch as a faint blush spreads over his cheeks but he shakes his head, dismissing the question.
“Just do. It doesn’t matter.” His motions on your leg pause as you finish your juice, allowing him to take the empty carton from you and place it on the floor behind him. “You feelin’ any better, darlin’?” You can tell by his voice that he is still anxious, his entire attention zoned in on you. You lean back into the cushions, taking a deep breath, slowly calming down. You’ve been there before, you’ve gone into low numbers. But it never gets less scary.
“It’s fine,” you reassure him because you can still feel his gaze on you. “Not like this hasn’t happened before.” The dry comment is aimed to brush him off but it seems to do the opposite.
“No. I mean, yes, but it shouldn't be happening at all,” Joel shakes his head and ow. You know you messed up but hearing it from him stings more than you thought it would.
“You try tracking every meal every day and living with this– this–” You can feel you working yourself up, anger bubbling inside you, anger more than happy to find an outlet. But then your eyes fall onto Joel's face. And you see the moment his eyes widen in sheer panic.
“No, no, god no, that is not what I meant–” He stumbles over his words in an attempt to get them out. “I wasn't blaming you, I was saying that– that it's not fair. I just hate to see you suffer, that's all.” His brown eyes remind you so much of a kicked puppy that you almost want to cry.
A soft hoot from your phone makes you both turn your heads, the number 107 popping up. Back in range. Joel sighs in relief.
“Good. This is good.” He stretches slightly, one hand pressed against his lower back. “You want a nap?”
“Just had one,” you say quietly, avoiding his eyes.
“Right,” he hums, pinching the bridge of his nose for a few moments and you know he’s thinking again, trying to figure out what to do with you. Because of course you have to make a lovely summer’s day so difficult.
“I’m sorry,” you whisper, trying and failing to keep the tears at bay. “I didn’t mean to ruin your evening, I know you had work–”
He cuts you off by squeezing your thigh once, shaking his head as he maneuvers himself onto the couch beside you. “Look at me, baby,” he coaxes you to shift towards him, his thumb brushing over your cheek. “I never ever want to hear you apologizing for this again. It ain’t your fault, darlin’. Never was and never will be. And I’ve told you before, we’re in this together. You don’t have to carry it all by yourself.”
A single tear rolls down your cheek and he catches it with his thumb, tutting quietly. His arms find their way around you and he pulls you into his chest, burying his nose in your hair, whispering sweet nothings into the otherwise silent room.
“How ‘bout we watch one of them movies you like so much?” Joel offers when he pulls back after a few minutes, his hand still intertwined with yours. You have movie night more often than not, but usually, he doesn’t let you pick. Nor you him. It's a middle ground, one that is found after quite a bit of discussion.
“You hate them,” you argue weakly, a small laughter slipping out. You’ve tried introducing Joel to Rom-Coms, the classics, the modern ones, those that he may not at first glance recognize as such. But so far, you haven’t hit his taste.
“Not today,” he hums with a small smile. “Today I promise I’ll love them.” You both chuckle quietly and he does let you pick, not once complaining as he kneels in front of the TV to start the movie. He keeps a watchful eye on you throughout the next roughly 90 minutes, getting you a glass of water and another snack when you need it, his arm comfortably wrapped around your shoulder like he’s not quite willing to let go.
“How did you know?” You ask into the near-silence when the credits are flickering over the screen, some love song quietly playing over them. “About the rule I mean.”
“Uh, let’s see–” Joel makes a face. “Might’ve read a book or two.”
You squeeze him a bit tighter at that. Because you know that people who see Joel in his truck or at the construction site may think he’s gruff and cold. You had similar worries when your eyes first landed on him. But you know how much he cares. About Sarah and about you, about being there in whatever way he can. No matter if it’s stocking up on juice or kissing you every morning or secretly reading books so he can understand you better. He’s here for it all. And so are you. Together.

Usually, you brought little snacky stuff with you to keep your sugar levels stable throughout the day. Today, you'd forgotten your stash at home. Only to realize when you were in the middle of first period, searching for one of those goodies.
"Shit," you muttered to yourself and raised your hand. The teacher looked to you, making a hand gesture for you to ask your question," can I go to the bathroom?"
"Hall pass is just on the ledge there," she nodded to the ledge of the chalkboard. You quickly stood, phone in your pocket. With quick hands you grabbed the pass, even quicker feet carrying you out of the room. Leaving the teacher and a few students (the ones who had been actually paying attention) to wonder why you were leaving so fast. The teacher knew you were diabetic and had a certain feeling in her gut that something might've been wrong. However, you were the type to say if there was. For the more immediate matters, anyway. Because of that, the teacher didn't think too hard on it.
You rushed to the bathroom. The thuds of your shoes echoing off the lockers. Reaching into your pocket, you fumbled getting your phone out. The stupid corners getting caught on the fabric of your pants.
"Come on, please.. there!" Your fist pumped in triumph, getting out your phone and quickly texting the group chat you shared with your girlfriends. One of them had bound to be on their phone right now. There was always at least one active. Especially in the middle of class. To your luck, it was Regina who responded to your text. The one that had the car.
You; I forgot my snacks at home!!
Regina; need me to pick something up?
Regina; i'm dying for a reason to get out of class
You; please, anything with sugar
Karen; ooo i luv sureger!!! i have sum!!
Gretchen; she's like always got something candy in her bag, i can bring some to you! where are you?
Relief filled you. You should have remembered Karen's habit of keeping sweets with her, luckily Gretchen remembered and was offering to bring it to you. Meanwhile Regina, was grumbling in class because she really wanted the excuse to leave. She decided to just do it anyway, heading to the bathroom after you texted you'd meet Gretchen there.
In the bathroom, Gretchen handed you a couple of snacks. Some of which happened to be your favourite, making you wonder if Karen carried those with her on purpose. If she knew you liked them.
"Here! Will this be enough for the day?" Gretchen asked, her tone rushed and laced with worry. Her eyes searching your own for any signs that something was wrong.
"Please say no so I can go to the gas station," Regina said, making her presence known when she walked in. You couldn't help but laugh, shaking your head.
"It should be fine, but you can still go Reggie, who knows. Maybe I'll need backups, hell I should probably keep a stash in my locker anyway," you thought out loud. You really wished you'd come up with that idea sooner. Regina smirked at that, looking thrilled to have a reason to leave school property. Not that her mom was one that would care anyway, but if any teachers asked... well, you were just the perfect excuse she needed.

A/N at end

———————————————
You were born with Type 1 diabetes. Thankfully your parents and doctor caught it early enough that it didn’t cause any real issues and your parents figured out your treatment quickly. They became very proficient at checking a squirming baby’s blood sugars and administering insulin no matter how much you kicked and screamed.
As you got older it became easier. You were able to recognize the changes in your body and manage your blood sugar levels before you could crash or go way too high. That isn’t to say that you never had issues with it. You had a habit of being so wrapped up in whatever you were doing that you wouldn’t notice the signs of your blood sugars being too high or low. Where you don’t notice the trembling in your hands until your heart is racing and you feel faint.
When you were younger it was easier. Your parents and teachers would notice before you did and would gently remind you to check your blood sugars and handle it. Even in university it was easier. You made sure your roommate, friends, and professors were all aware so you always had someone nearby who was vigilant enough to notice when you would suddenly be fatigued or your responses came slower.
After you graduated things got a lot harder. Without someone to remind you of your diabetes you struggled to stay on top of it. At first you tried things like insulin pumps and timers but you would forget to change out your pump and would unconsciously silence your timers without actually processing that they were going off. You ended up in the hospital a few too many times.
Eventually a nurse that now considered you a regular - you assumed was probably tired of seeing you - suggested that you get a service dog. Your multiple hospital visits would paint a picture of your diabetes being severe enough for insurance to cover most, if not all, of the costs. So you did. You got a German Shepherd who you named Hecate.
Having a service dog helped immensely. She was an alarm you couldn’t silence, a warning sign that was impossible to ignore. You brought her everywhere, but you will forever be grateful that you brought her to the appointment that led you to meeting Alex Keller.
The waiting room of the doctor’s office was full so you had Freya laying under your chair. Alex sat next to you and asked very respectful questions about your service dog and you asked him about what brought him to the doctors. He learned about your diabetes and your habit of accidentally ignoring your health. You learned that he retired from the CIA after losing his leg, that he could have kept going but decided that his leg was a sign that it was time to do something else.
You hit it off, exchanged numbers, and the rest is history. You dated, fell in love, moved in together. He learned to help you with your diabetes and you learned how to help with his leg. He never got mad when you would forget about your diabetes, you would hold him and play with his hair when he got phantom pains. You understood each other better than anyone else ever could. Maybe that is why you can’t imagine a future without him.
You and Alex set aside a day every week just to spend with each other. Today is one of those days. You’ve spent hours walking around downtown, going through shops and cafes, and enjoying each other’s presence. He holds your hand while Hecate’s leash is in the other, you can’t conceive a more perfect day. In one of the stores Hecate suddenly alerted, sitting down and pressing her nose against your leg. Alex, ever the perfect boyfriend, immediately starts digging through his bag that holds everything from your glucometer and insulin to emergency juice boxes and snacks.
“How is it? High? Low?” Alex asks after you check your blood sugar, ready to help you handle it in any way he can.
“Mmh it’s low.” You murmur, suddenly feeling the symptoms of low blood sugar that you hadn’t yet noticed now that you’ve been made aware of it. You grip Hecate’s leash tighter and rest your other hand on Alex’s forearm to help support yourself. Alex - somehow always knowing exactly what you need before you can say it - hands you one of your emergency juice boxes that he’s already opened, and wraps an arm around your waist. You lean into him heavily as you sip the juice box.
“Let’s go find somewhere to sit while that juice works its magic.”
“Sounds good to me.” You agree, following Alex as he steers you out of the store and to a nearby bench. You’re pretty sure it’s a bus stop but a bench is a bench.
Hecate situated herself at your feet, Alex is pressed against your side with his arm still wrapped around you. Sure, you don’t feel great right now but you also wouldn’t have it any other way. You absolutely adore your life, even if it isn’t always easy.
