I'm rewatching Diagnosis, because I have some better bg now.
I'm watching episode 2 with the little girl facing a hemispherectomy at age 7.
The diagnostician made a simple request: "get a second opinion." And in my medical brain I'm like "of course" but it was surprising to hear that the little girl's mother hadn't considered it. It's no wonder people don't trust physicians. Keeping patients in the dark, not encouraging second opinions on a radical surgery... I'm glad this family had great resources and was able to find people to advocate and make sure they were making the best decision.
The little girl herself also shows interest in wanting to know what is happening to her. "I hate the seizures"
"Why did the drug make me aggressive?" And the mom is so patient, answering all of her questions. I appreciated they tried to help her understand and respected her autonomy.
