Today we celebrate the Venerable Gregory the Great, the Dialogist and Pope of Rome. Saint Gregory grew up in a family full of saints and received an excellent secular education and attained high government positions. He soon gave up his earthly riches and devoted himself to God through monasticism, establishing six monasteries in his lifetime. Having been elected as Pope of Rome, Saint Gregory guided the church in love and piety. (It must be noted that Saint Gregory lived before the Great Schism when the Pope of Rome was still in communion with the Orthodox Church). Having written numerous works, one of them including the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts which is celebrated every Wednesday and Friday during Great Lent, Saint Gregory reposed in 604AD and today his relics can be found in the Cathedral of the Holy Apostle Peter in the Vatican.
