Fans came out in droves for the beautiful musical journey, and were not disappointed. Ani DiFranco and Diane Patterson both gave it their all for an amazing evening, and their passion will surely continue to change the world one venue at a time just as they did in the heart of Broad Ripple Village at The Vogue.

Everybody takes the Money by Diane Patterson: Book Review

Blurb: Drusilla Thorne offered to help a friend with an interview, and now she’s been beaten up and has assault charges leveled at her. Then the main witness who could back up her story gets murdered. Drusilla didn’t see the killer, but the killer clearly saw her.

And it’s only Tuesday.

This, the second book in the series hits the ground running – I know, I know you’ve heard that before, but Diane Patterson has an enviable talent for pacing and keeping the tension in her writing on a knife’s edge, even with Dru is on a stakeout. I think it has a lot to do with this being written in first person, and Dru is always on guard – she can’t afford not to be after 11 years of being on the run. As a result, Patterson’s writing always has this thread of tension running through it, never letting up on keeping you hooked until the last page.

The title for this book is pretty apt – Dru’s life is subsumed by money. She needs for Stevie and herself, she needs it to stay out of Roberto’s clutches, but at the same time it’s her promised inheritance that keeps her doing what he wants. And, it’s how the book opens – Dru is Anne’s unofficial bodyguard, accompanying her to interviews with sketchy people and ensuring she doesn’t get herself killed. She’s getting paid for it, of course.

And, then there’s Hollywood – everyone wants money.

The story starts simply enough – Anne is off to interview Courtney, a former reality TV starlet in preparation for a reunion TV special of the show. Roger Sabo, Courtney’s boyfriend, is there when the interview happens, Like Courtney, he’s a drug addict, something Dru picks up on quickly enough. And immediately after, Courtney is killed – shot through a window while Dru is trying to prevent Sabo from killing her.

And so Hollywood secrets come to light – Courtney’s past, her links to a finance company and the nastiness going down there, which in turn leads Dru to the unlikeliest of killers. It’s a sad story, and ultimately one that comes down to a father trying to protect his family – which is in stark contrast to the details we finally get to know about Dru’s family.

Turning up at yet another murder is does not look good on anyone’s record, let along Dru’s, but with her lawyer Nathaniel at her side (and Anne) she has a chance of making it out okay. Roberto though, her step-father, is still paying Nathaniel’s bills and still wants her to get her act together (and Stevie’s) so she can return to New York.

Book 2 dropped enough hints for readers that Dru was trying to save Stevie when she killed a man and earned her father’s wrath, but in this book Dru explains the cycle of child abuse her father had subjected her to and would have subjected Stevie too had Dru not intervened AKA killed a man. We also find just how much money and power are after Dru and Stevie, and have been for 11 years.

And Dru bets right when she tells Nathaniel this – he’s a good guy, even if he’s working for Roberto, and he agrees not to tell Roberto that she’s been involved as a witness to Courtney’s murder.

Anne, interestingly, and Dru’s relationship grows in this book, though in ways that could prove dangerous to Dru. Anne is her friend, a fact she is angry at herself for being true, most especially because Anne is a journalist – the kind of journalist, I suspect who will do her best on fluff pieces, even if she’s hanging out for a meaty story… like Dru and Stevie’s real identity. In this book, Anne also gets to see more of Dru – the determined, violent ass-kicker who will take down the bad guy, and has dealt in death before; and more importantly to Anne, she’s comfortable with it (it leads to an interesting end in this book for their relationship, and I am curious how things are going to go with them.)

Roberto is still controlling Dru in his way, telling her to take care of things for him in LA, and introducing her to a therapist that she is in dire need of. She resists of course, but Dru is self-aware enough to know when she and Stevie need help, even if she hates it. She also comes to realise what he needs from her, which makes for an exciting promise to the future of the books – if we get to see her return to her family in this series, that is, or if it’s about the lead up to her return to power in her family.

Detective Gruen is still around investigating as well, and still the target of Dru’s lust. It’s the one thing I’m not sure what to make of in this book – it’s a very shallow, perhaps superficial relationship by the end of this book that I’m wondering if he’s going to be around more in the next one in the series as there doesn’t seem to be a point to him. Dru likes Gruen, but not enough to trust him with the truth about her – that she tells Nathaniel.

Patterson is a riveting writer, I think and this series of books is proving mighty addictive. What am I going to do until the next one comes out?
